Babies with Acid Reflux

Was thinking about something and wondering if it was due to acid reflux. I took my 7 mos. old to the dr. after finding that her eardrums were flat meaning there was fluid or an ear infections as she was miserable. At the appt. the dr. checked her throat and it was pretty red. Though uncommon, she tested for strep anyway since my nephew had it. It came back negative so after I left I got to thinking. Could her throat be red due to the acid reflux? Any other moms with babies and reflux or know if that could be the cause? Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

My duaghter had reflux It typically starts between 8-12 weeks. She was spitting up constantly - around 24 times a day. She wsa irritable when she was spitting up and preferred to spend a lot of time on her tummy. She gained weight but slowly. We fed her several smaller portions (2 ounces at a time - sometimes with a dropper to keep it down.) She outgrow it around 12 months. I do not remember a red throat being part of the equation but it is worth talking to your doctor about. Best of luck and hope she is feeling better soon!

if your baby spits up a lot I can imagine the throat would get pretty red. Many childrens throats are pretty red with a cold- post nasal drip and allergies.

My daughter had reflux as a baby. Signs of it are generally a LOT of spitting up (almost like they have the flu), constant upset stomach and a gassy tummy. She cried often due to all the discomfort. Her pediatrician never mentioned a red throat though. My cousins daughter still has acid reflux (now 6 yrs) but hers was so bad that they had to feed her with an eye dropper otherwise she wouldn't hold any of it down. If your daughter has any of these other symptoms, I would have the pediatrician check it out.

Hi T.,

Chances are very high (having a baby with reflux - he was diagnosed at 4 weeks) that you would have spotted other troublesome symptoms previous to 7 months...for instance...can't lay flat, vomiting, spitting up, crying after meals, eating small amounts, being inconsolably fussy, crying in pain, frequent hiccups, etc.

If she has an issue in her ears, the redness is most likely due to drainage from the ears and sinuses.

I will say though, more than once I have had my kids test negative to strep and then a few days later after symptoms did not improve, i asked for a 2nd test, and they've come back positive. I don't believe the 5 minute office tests are sensitive enough to pick up strep if it's early in the infection... though, like you said... it's pretty uncommon for babies to get strep. although not entirely impossible.

Good luck :) I hope your little girl is feeling better soon,...

Hello,

My son was diagnosed with reflux when he was 3 months old and he is now 21 months. If you daughter is fussy after eating, throws up a lot, fussy when lays down it's most likely what she has. You can have a simple test done, your daughter would need to drink barium and would have to lay down under an x-ray bed machine to see if the barium comes back up and it's harmless to your child. They told me my son had it bad, but he didn't have too many symptoms. He didn't throw up like most kids would. He was basically fussy after feedings and when he was laying down. I do have a lot of friends/family that have children who have been diagnosed with reflux since my son has been born, which is really wierd. It seems to be a more common things these days, so I would get her tested if you have that mommy instinct. Good Luck!
