B-day Gift Idea for 3 Year Old Boy

Hi Moms -
I'm looking for a b-day gift idea in the $25 range for my son, who is about to turn three. He loves all-things construction, but doesn't need any more trucks. He isn't really into art, though he enjoys Play-Doh. I've been thinking about moonsand, but have been told that it is a mess (true? worth it anyway?). I would love to hear suggestions about toys that have worked for the three-year-old boys in your life! Thanks!

What can I do next?

TINKER TOYS! We bought my son a set ofr his 3rd birthday and he loves them! Easily the best gift he received. That and an electric "air guitar".

Blocks, Legos, Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs. Anything to do with building & creating.

The Moon Sand is super fun, but if you are going to get it, use it outside.

My kids like MoonSand.
My son was playing with it at 3 years old. And he was fine! I simply, put it all on a big tarp, and then he could go at it. And yes, I did this IN our house. It was fine.
Then to clean it up, simply dust broom it, then put it back into its container.
Simple.

Or, my son loves Dinosaurs.
Or Hot Wheels.
Or, remote control things.
Or Legos
Or Blocks
Or puzzles

Wow, boys are so easy
Balls,
cars,
Tools,
Trucks,
Building blocks, sets etc.
Really you know your baby better than anyone, you will know exactly what he will LOVE when you go look.

My 2 boys are so different it is not funny; my oldest LOVED Thomas the train sets, balls, and remote control cars. My youngest boy, loves to play w/ play dough, color, and paint. he also wants everything his brother has just to have the same stuff but his pashions are completly different. Look at what he enjoys and use that as your modivation.

ZOOBS!!!!!! http://www.amazon.com/Infinitoy-11125-ZOOB-125-Piece-Set/...
I know it says 5 or 6 and up but a 3 year old can definitely play with them safely. I have 2 boys who have always LOOOVED to build things and a few years ago at Xmas time I was in your same position... We already had the Legos, K'nex, Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys - - so I found this kit on Amazon several years ago and THEY STILL play with them (and they are in 2nd and 4th grade now! LOL) http://www.amazon.com/Zoob-12052-ZOOBMobile-Car-Designer/.... We have since purchased several more kits. I can't recommend the ZOOB toys highly enough.
Another REALLY fun and very unusual toy is the Galimoto (a push toy with moving parts; it's a handmade little guy that rides a bicycle, made of wire, so cool!)

There is also a book that you can buy to go along with it.

Total cost is under $20 :) We have bought this for several kids as bday presents as well since our own kids (and all of their friends that came over) used to play with them constantly, and have races down the hallway :) Pretty durable too - if they bend it, you can just bend it back into shape. Best part is that the proceeds benefit underpriviledged workers in Africa. Good luck and Happy Bday to your sweet little boy! :)

Moonsand is such a mess. I really don't recommend it. A tool set can be a fun toy for boys this age. There are some fun Black & Decker sets available on Amazon.

Board games are fun for three year olds too. Candy Land, Chutes & Ladders, Sequence for Kids and many more.

Please also check out my Discovery Toys website. We have great things for preschoolers. Motor Works is our number one selling toy and a favorite among boys this age. Zingo is also very popular. Please check them out at http://www.discoverytoyslink.com/karenchao Everything comes with a lifetime warranty. Kids and parents all love them!

Trains, blocks, and legos (the bigger ones) are always great. My 3 year old plays with his blocks and legos every single day. He uses foam blocks more than anything, they are bright colored and different shapes, and he loves them. Kids can always use more of all of those things, if they enjoy them.

How about a vest, gloves and hard hat? Or a toolbox with some tools.

Don't know about the Mood Sand...but glad I read what I did here.

Did you know you can make your own play dough??? Maybe you can make a few batches of different colors (and smells!) and get some extra tools or contraptions? Homemade play dough is easy to make and very cheap for the amount you make. It lasts a long time in ziploc bags. :)

PM me if you want the recipe.

Moon sand is messy. I tried it once and that was it. What about Light Bright?

Hi...

I cannot stress this enough: Do NOT get Moon Sand! It is sooooo messy! I'd rather dig Play-Doh out of my carpets than deal with Moon Sand. :)

My son just turned 3 in May. He loves Thomas the Train a lot and they have some really great variations and toys that are Thomas. Also, you can get fun construction tables that have "tools" and "screws", etc... and when he's finished playing with the tools, the table holds the tools.. makes clean up time so much easier.

Hi Happy Mamma,

I have a thought:

I made a collage of pics of my son, including some ticket stubs to events we went to...or pics from a magazine for him to share with his pre-school to show what he did over the summer. He loves it. he did not want to leave it there and shows it to everyone....

you could perhaps do this in addition to a toy gift.

Jilly

P.S. I am really into buying things :) so I was so surprised and happy when he liked this thing I made him....
