Both my girls are on antibiotics right now. But my youngest, who is 2, is on Augmentin and having diarrhea that's making her bottom pretty sore. Doing BRAT diet, probiotics, plenty of diaper cream. Just wondering if the diarrhea lasts the whole duration the child is on the medicine or does it get better? Any mom's have problems with their children continuing the diarrhea after the medicine? Thanks.

What can I do next?

My son got C Diff from Augmentin; he had severe diarrhea and a raw little bottom. He was put on a different medication to fight the C Diff. If the diarrhea doesn't go away, you might want to have a stool sample taken to rule this out.

I was fine with Augmentin as a child/young adult. I took it five weeks ago (I'm 45) and was exploding both ways just after three doses. Awful!! I was told to stop, this was too extreme.

We used to call them "Augmentin diapers" and they were terrible! Thankfully they *only* lasted the 10 days of the medicine and then promptly went away, so you don't have too much longer to go!

Augmentin is known for causing stomach upset and will probably last the whole time. If this is a 10 day course and you're only a few days into it, then call the doc and see if you can switch. If you're close to being done, then stick it out. Also you need to wait and take the probiotic after you're done, you can take it while taking the med however, it's really not doing much good. Just as the probiotic starts to help you take another dose of med, just kind of a vicious cycle.

Try Bag Balm for her bottom. Ask the pharmacist for it and they can tell you where it is. Works absolute wonders.

This medication made my son so miserable with diarrhea that I took him off of it. It's now in his record as him having a GI intolerance to it.. and I refuse to have it prescribed. There are other medications that will work if it causes a painful/restrictive problem (that for my son was actually worse than the original illness we were treating!) to me, it is not worth it. My son was older, no longer in diapers and attending preschool, so this 'side effect' was a BIG problem for us. If your daughter is not tolerating it there is a risk of dehydration etc... but only you can determine if it's severe enough to warrant a call to your doctor for a switch. As far as your original question, for us the diarrhea stopped a day or 2 after he went off of it. Good luck!

most likely will last a few days after the medication is finished...as the good bacteria builds back up in her system!!

It's normal. Unfortunate side affect of the antibiotic. I hope she's better soon!! You can help not only with the probiotics but with more fiber...bananas (part of the BRAT diet) and other green leafy veggies that have fiber!

Hope she's better soon!!

Yes and yes. For my DD when she was still in diapers it would last the duration of the course of abx and a few days on top.
You can give probiotics ... but that never helped much for us. It just takes some time for the intestinal flora to reestablish.

Also... if you see her get very rashy she may have a yeast infection of top of the rash... very common - just something too look out for.

My daughter can't take Augmentin. She did before and didn't have problems but the last time it made her vomit.

My son and I have both taken it and it is h*** o* your stomach but we take on a full stomach and don't have a problem. The diarrhea could be a symptom of a virus rather than a side effect of the medicine.

We had this problem with our son and went back to the pediatrician because his bottom was so sore. The ped took another look at his ears and just took him off the antibiotic altogether. I was worried about antibiotic resistance, but he said that more and more the standard of care with such strong antibiotics was 5 or even 3 days (instead of 10) and that his ear looked much better and he should be fine without. And he was. Call the doctor - at the very least maybe they can switch you to a milder antibiotic. That diaper rash hurts them so badly, and it will get much worse over the course of the medicine.
