Attention Deficit Disorder
I have a daughter who just turned 9 who was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder several years ago and is currently on Adderall XR, 25mg. She has problems with focus and memory processing speed, not so much the hyper aspect of it all. It seems at times, actually alot that her personality has been wiped away when she is on her medicine. Even though the teacher says she laughs and socializes with her friends. Many times she starts crying abruptly over the smallest of things. I have heard many good things about the Daytrana Patch. I feel awful that she needs medicine to get through school daily but on the other hand I feel if she does not get her medicine I am almost punishing her because it makes her day extremely difficult.
I would like any advice or support from other parents who have children with ADD/ADHD. thanks so much in advance.

S.,
My son was diagnosed with ADHD at 6. We tried Adderall XR first and it was a nightmare. His personality went downhill pretty quick. He didn't seem to care about anything and was always acting depressed. To top it off, we couldn't get him to eat. It got so bad at one point he wouldn't even drink water. We switched him to Concerta and haven't had a single bad side effect. He's his normal happy self, eats regularly and has brought his grades from all F's to all B's. I haven't heard much about Daytrana yet.
Good luck!

My son is 9 and was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 6. We started him on Adderall and he lost his personality as well. We switched him to Concerta nad he has been on it since. It has made such a difference!! Talk with his doctor and let them know what your concerns are. Sometimes it just takes time to find the right medication for the child. Good Luck!!

My daughter is 9 and has been on Concerta for 2 years. She is the same silly, fun loving little girl with a lot more focus and ease in learning. We have had wonderful results with it. I would recommend talking with your daughters Doctor about switching her medication if it is changing her personality. Good luck to you!

I just wanted to let you know about a group of doctors who are treating ADHD (as well as autism and other related conditions) from a biomedical perspective that does not (usually) include pharmaceuticals. You can learn more about this in a terrific new book called:
Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma, and Allergies
http://www.randomhouse.com/rhpg/catalog/display.pperl?isb...
In addition I would recommend the book: Enzymes for Autism and Other Neurological Condition (again relevant for many things - not just autism).
The drugs will manage the symptoms but there is a niche of doctors getting to the "root" cause and treating/healing it.
Good luck

I am 24 years old and was diagnosed with ADD when I was 13. My mother believed that there had to be an alternative approach. I do think that medication is the answer for some but it wasnt for me. I went to the Pfeiffer Treatment Center. They treat through Vitamins and minerals. I have had 100% success and still use there method. Check out there site. http://www.hriptc.org/

I know how you feel. I have 2-13 year old sons who are adhd and taking medication. I have struggled for years with the guilt of having to make them take their medicine. 25 mg sounds like a high dose. My son also takes 25 mg adderall xr. You might see if the dose can be decreased to a suitable level. Also considering the patch, it is ritalin, a totally different drug. My docter was hesitant to switch my son to the patch because of this. Also will you take her off the adderall for the summer months? My children are drug free all summer long. A couple weeks before school starts they take their trip back to the doc to get back in their routine. It gives them the summer to be themselves. Hope this helped.
