Hi,

I am currently switching to a new pediatrician for my 18 month old daughter. This has been a hard decision for us, we love our current doctor, but the distance is just too far to travel since we moved. We have decided to take her to Northwestern Children's Practice after hearing good things about them. I was wondering if any of you moms may be able to recommend specific providers at this practice or your experience there. Also, if there is any doctor that we should steer clear of or things to keep in mind. I loved my last ped because he was very attentive and really took what I had to say into consideration. He always took his time with my daughter and made her very comfortable. he never seemed bothered by last minute appts or an occasional after hours page. I would love to have the same great experience with a new ped. Thanks for any advice!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the responses. My daughter had her first appt last week at the NCP with Dr. Goldstein. He was very thorough and caring. We really felt like he was listening and took his time with our daughter. The practice seems great and we will definitely be returning. Thanks to all those who made suggestions!

I take my son to Dr. Taxman (who is in the same group as Weinstein, Cahan, and Panoushis). Dr. Taxman is amazing as are Weinstein and Panoushis. Cahan is a very good doctor, but I agree with Meghan, his bedside manner is to be desired. I just steer clear of him and make appointments with the other doctors. They are a great group though. Very thorough and caring.

This practice charges $25 if you call them for consultation....and your insurance will not cover for that.......I guess the next step will be to tip a doctor !!!!

That is outrageous. Physicians don't know what is the Hydromorphone ( Dilaudid )-drug that is widely used everywhere, they also have never heard for Zolpidem nad pregnancyrelated issue and had to search the Internet and came back to give me some vague answer.
They are only good for basic (to measure height and weight of your child) but for the well being of your child do not go there.... beside most of them are not doctors but nurse practitioners.

Stuff is so rude and unpleasant .......

They have been reported to BBB as well.

We switched to this practice after having a bad expereince with a different MD. We love the practice. We have seen several of the docs. Dr. Hirsh and Goldstein are our favorites, but they are all pretty good. You may be stuckj scheduling your first appointment with the newest member of the practice, but once you are in as a patient, you ahve the option to schedule with anyone.

They are very attentive at returning phone calls and don't make you feel silly for calling with questions. We are probably going to move to the burbs this summer and are actually pretty bummed to have to find new docs!

Best of luck!

I agree with Meredith on her current doctors. We have been going to Cahan's practice for almost 7 years. I'm not so thrilled with Dr. Cahan (he is a bit gruff) but Weinstein and Taxman are amazing. They make the kids feel comfortable and laugh. they take the time to talk to us and not make us feel like we shouldn't ask the question. They usually have a female doctor in the practice but the women don't seem to stay very long. We haven't seen the newest female doctor so i can't say how long she has been there or whether she is good.

When you call after hours you get one of the doctors and they are great about talking you through whatever you need. They have a great relationship with Children's Memorial and have called ahead when we need to go there. They are also very good with referrals to specialty doctors at Childrens.

I'm not trying to change your mind about your choice, just trying to let you know there are other options out there.

We started taking our daughter there shortly after she was born because of bad experiences at Town and Country in LP. We love Northwestern Children's Practice! Actually, another mom from this site recommended them to us. I have had appts with all of the peds there, but I have to say that I really like Dr. Goldstein above all.

We see Dr. King, and he's very nice, great with the kids, patient with the adults. We saw Dr. Hirsch and she was OK, but I didn't like her as much. She was a bit condescending to me. It's a high-quality practice, you can't go wrong!

I think Dr. Unger is the best. This is a very high profile office. When you call for questions or concerns about your child, a nurse returns your calln not the doctor. If you call after hours, it will cost you $20 (if i remember correctly). I think Dr Unger is amazing but the cons started to outweigh the pros.
I now go to Dr Panoushis in the Galter building. She is with Drs Cahan, Taxman and Weinstein all excellent doctors.

My daughter goes to Dr. Hirsch and we love her. She has always taken her time and been very thorough. She's great with my daughter who's now 21 months (we've been seeing her since day 1). When we have questions, the nurse practitioners call back and they are always great. (note that they are nurse practitioners, not just nurses). They also have walk-ins if your child is sick. Good luck!

Hi A.,

My name is P. and I have a 3yr old son that has been with Northwestern since birth. He is seen by two wonderful doctor's at the location on 233 E. Erie on the 3rd floor. Dr. Barrows and Dr. Starr were there when he was born at Prentice Women's Hospital and he has been under their care ever simce. They are very loving and attentive with the children and provide a wealth of preventitive information at every visit. I strongly recommend that you look into meeting with both Dr's Starr and Barrows in regards to your childs care. Their number is ###-###-####. Good luck! I know you will be very impressed

Hi A., we see Dr. Weissbluth at the practice and he is great. When we came to sick visits it was always Dr. Goldstein taking care of our son. He is very relaxed and as Dr. Weissbluth always lets you feel that your child is in good hands. They take their time with the children which means that you sometimes have to wait for your appointment because they often run behind schedule. But I love the practice and never had a bad experience, except of the wait thing. And they validate the valet parking at the W Hotel for a whole day so you can stay in that area as long as you want which is an extra bonus to me. I know two moms who had some issues with after hours calls and questions left on the nurses answering maching, they were never called back buy the nurses. This never happend to me though.
I hope that you find a doctor you like!
