this is the 2nd time this has happened in a yr. The middle of the night my son starts screaming he can't breath, gets hysterical, crying and coughing and has that seal bark. Each time we aren't sure if was his rescue inhaler (on hand but doesn't have asthma) or him finally calming down that made it better.... this time he was upset for an hr.
he wasn't sick that day, and he wasn't sick the day after (just a sore throat from coughing too much).
His coughing and breathing probs were literally an hour? and that was it.

has anyone had this happen? could this be an allergy? or croup just fora few hrs? seems odd

thanks

What can I do next?

My 8yr old gets croup a few times a year. If it is cold outside I would take her out to get some cold air, if not I just put her in a steamy shower. In most cases she is fine and can go off to school. I also have a nebulizer at home for my other daughter and can just use that with the sodium chloride
( water).

my daughter is 17 years old now and every year has croup. she was finally diagnosed with asthma, but seasonal asthma. when it gets real bad i would sit in the bathroom with her , and have all the hot water running with a towel against the crack under the door. it helps.

Yes this use to happen to my daughter untill she was 7. When its happening you can take him in the bathroom and run the hot water or take him out side in the cold.

Years ago I took my son to the doctor one night with croup and the next day he was fine. Go figure. Anyway, all the moms have wonderful advice.

No - it doesnt sound like croup. Croup is viral laryngitis in kids and is usually bad for a night or two and then gets better as the throat swelling improves.

Definitely talk to your doc or your asthma specialist about this - to me it sounds like reflux. If you've never had it, you just dont know how painful it is and how irritating it is on your throat. Reflux can also trigger a bronchospasm or a laryngeal spasm. If your son has asthma and is having any kind of difficulty breathing, you should have him assessed right away.

I hope he feels better!

Croup can be a very fast illness...Sometimes just one night of the uncontrollable coughing, gasping, etc. Plus, late winter/early spring is definitely a common time for it. One hour seems awfully fast though. How old is he? The older they are the easier it becomes until eventually they outgrow it (or when they have it as adults it is simply called laryngitis). My recollection of having it as a child is that I could be sleeping pretty comfortably only to be struck by a tickle in my throat and then off I'd go and nothing could stop it. Did he have a stuffy head or runny nose over the next few days? That is a common after-symptom of croup. If not, I would have he assessed just so you feel better.

My son had it for one night when he was just under 2 years old. I got scared and rushed him to the hospital, but of course he was pretty much better by the time we got him outside and to the hospital. The cool air I'm sure helped. He was also fine the day before, and after, and hasn't done it again since. Odd...yes, but it happened to us too!

I have 9 kids, so we've had this several times. The cool oustide, warm steamy air, even just having them breathe thru a wet washcloth helps. Usually the next morning they are fine. Just seems like some viral things going thru the house will do it. These mild cases don't require a doctors care (we've only needed doctor care for a bad case once, in an infant that had recently had RSV).

Yes, that has happened to my kids! One horrible night of them barking & coughing and me wondering all night how sick they were and very worried. Then nothing in the morning. So I knew it wasn't croup. Croup doesn't go away in a few hours.

Several possibilities: possible food allergy to something he ate late in the day, possible airborne allergen, dry room? (try a cool mist humidifier when the heat runs at night) or he did a lot of breathing thru the mouth when he fell asleep and the throat got real dry. Again, the cool mist humidifier should help.
