Hi. My oldest daughter has been on Concerta medication for her ADHD condition for over 1 year. She was fully potty trained and in Kindergarten. Now she has to wear 2 pull ups. It seems like her bladder issues are getting worse on the medicine. I asked her PCP and Psychiatrist about it and they both stated that this is not a known side effect. I called Concerta makers and they said the same. I was just wondering is anyone else having the same side effects. Her meds have been changed and it just seems like night and day. Now she is back to normal. I just wanted to know.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for the input. I will advice the maker of Concerta that this is occuring among other children and that it needs to be looked at. My daughters medicine has been changed to Vyvanse, which is the new Adderall. She has improved within 24 hours of changing medicines. When she was on Concerta her bladder could not advise her brain that she needed to go to the bathroom. It was ruining her self esteem and she had no friends because no one wanted to be around someone who pees constantly. Now she has friends and she gets up daily ready for school. Most important part is that she is dry. I will keep you posted on what I can find. Please call Concerta and advice them of your own experience with this medication. Also if you know anyone who has a child on this medicine please advise them to watch for additional side effects that may not be listed as a side effect for this medicine. You can Contact the maker of Concerta @ 1-888-440-7903. Thank you for your input.

Hi E.,

I have a daughter that was diagnosed with ADHD young. I did not want to put her on medication because I was suspicious of how many kids were "all of a sudden" developing ADD, ADHD, ODD, SPD and Autism. I researched and studied and my daughter no longer has a diagnosis of ADD and I did it without medicine. I also did it effortlessly! (I also have a good friend whose Autistic son has been mainstreamed into the public school system and is doing well.) If you are interested in talking, I'm always happy to share. Too many of these drugs are not just causing suicidal tendencies but homicidal ones as exhibited in Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris.

My verizon cell is ###-###-####. I'm available anytime you want to talk.

M.

I am about to give birth to my first child, but we see quite a few children in our Chiropractic office. I would go back to the basics not only for your daughter, but also for your other children. Make sure you are giving them proper nutrition with plenty of fruits and veggies.(You may have to find ways to sneak it into their diet, but it's vital!) Stay away from refined foods. It might be easier, but it's not better for them. Make sure they are getting plenty of exercise and finally, look for more holistic options. All medications have side effects. I'm not saying that there is never a need for them, but it could be minimized by using some alternative approaches as well. Please feel free to contact me if you would like more info.

Hi, my daughter is the same age as yours and she has bipolar disorder and adhd. She was on 27 mgs of Concerta ER for a week (about two weeks ago) I ended up taking her off of it bc she could't get to sleep at night. Well, now that you mention it she was wetting herself daily that week but I didn't make think about it being that med. Now she is on 10 mgs of ritalin. Hhhmmmmm......

My son, who is now 5 1/2, was put on Concerta a little over a year ago. He ended up like a zombie, began bedwetting again and was having "accidents" more than he did when we were getting off the pull ups. The dr told me the same thing, it wasnt a know side effect, but then again-- not all side effects are known. Is there maybe another medication that you could try?

My daughter is seven years old and has never had a problem with wetting herself until she started taking Concerta. She told me she doesn't know why she wet herself. This is the second time it's happened and I'm convinced it is the medication.

I have not had any problems with the Concerta like you are describing but I did have problems with Adderall-things that were not listed as side effects & it was horrible! You know your kids better than anyone! Listen to your heart!

Good luck!
ps.
My daughter (7) takes 27mg of Concerta a day.

i used concerta on my son for a while. i had setbacks like you are talking about. the medicine does different things to different children.

what you are describing may not be a known side effect. it didn't happen in the test group so they didn't list it as a side effect. if enough parents complain about a setback, then they may have to redo the testing and actually look at this as a valid side effect.

a similar thing happened with Zoloft. they did not know about the suicidal tendencies because they did not come up in the test group - but it still happens so now they have to list the side effect.

My daughter was never on concerta i know with the ADD she wasn't going to the potty when she needed to she was just too busy. i now have her on no meds. me and her teacher agree on it being best for my child anyway. she does great in school with minor issues not getting her classwork done but he's going to be sending her classwork she doesn't get done home with her for homework. she has ODD as well and we run a tight ship with her she hates being grounded so thus she is learning to control herself and that there are consequences. i'd take her to a specialist tell him about the issues and that she didn't have them before she started the meds. he may want to change them. i know what decided me on my daughter is she got suicidal at 8 wanted to die. would get violent coming off the adderol. was told similar stuff happened with ridalin so i decided to do it the way my parents did with us. gl
