Anyone Have Placenta Previa and Need a Hysterectomy?

Hello all,

I'm 33 weeks pregnant and have a full placenta previa. This is my 3 baby, 1st c-section. I have schedualed c-section for May 8th... I'm cool with that.
My doctor told me today that it's a possibility that with this I could need a hysterectomy. I know he was just letting me know the worst case scenario, but it kind of bummed me out.
Has anyone had experience with this?... I hope not. Any advice?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just wanted to let all those who helped calm my nerves by: telling me their stories or giving me advice or just saying something, that everything turned out fine. May 8th I had my little girl and everything turned out great! The c-section went well. Afterward I did hemerage a lot, but after 3 shots of some miracle blood clotter I was ok.

I'm not a fan of c-sections, but I'm grateful that we are able to have them. Saved my life.

Thanks,
H.

Hi H.,yes your doctor is giving you the worst scenario so you will be prepared for anything. It is almost like when you sign any consent before surgery, have you read the stuff in the consent that talks about what can happen to you during surgery!!!!!well how rare is that.I haven't had placenta previa myself but have been taking care of so many patients with complete previa and luckly nobody had to have hystrectomy. If this was your 3rd c.section when you have previous scar on your uterus then there is a very rare condition when placenta tissue grows inside the scars making it hard to be removed causing sever bleeding that is life threatening then to save life hysterectomy is performed.Hope this will help you relax for the rest of your pregnancy and good luck.

H.,

My friend had complete Placenta Previa and bled so much after the c-section! She had a hysterectomy and is really happy with it! My sister had complete placenta previa and did not need a hysterectomy! So I think it is the luck of the draw! Pray and have confidence in your doctor! I know it is a bummer when things don't go as planned, but there is a reason for everything! Good Luck!

I had complete previa with my 3rd child. It was my first c-section and I was warned about a possible hysterectomy (it didn't happen). It happened to my mother after 5 children. I think that you are correct that you are being warned of a worst case scenario. Hang in there! It is very upsetting but odds are that all will be fine!

H.,

I had FULL PLACENTA PREVIA with my second child and I also had a very rare complication where the placenta grows trough the Uterine wall, thus becoming "one" with the Uterus. It's called Placenta Procreta. The only thing you can do is remove the uterus at the time of the deliver via C-Section and I had no choice about that. My child will be 2 years old on May 1 and I have to tell you that not having a period is something that most women envy. I love not dealing with that aspect of being a woman. They left the ovaries and fallopian tubes so that I still have the hormone production. The recovery was a piece of cake. I only took pain killers for the first 24 hours at the hospital and I didn't even need Advil after that. Good Luck!

Hi,

I also had Full Placenta Previa - this was on my 3rd child and my first c-section. Everything went fine and I did not need to have a hysterectomy. My baby girl arrived 2 months early however, she came 12/31/08 -I knew I was going to have the c-section but my dr was trying to hold out for 3 weeks before my due date - but my daughter had other plans, she is healthy and happy tho so no complaints =)
Good Luck to you and just pray - don't focus on what "could" happen and make yourself stress out - you have much better to look forward to =)

Hi there, My last child was full placentia previa and I too had to have my first c section. My doctor gave me he same warning as yours, but everything turned out fine. I know it's hard, but try not to worry about it, it'll be what it'll be. You have way more important and joyous things to focus on. Good luck.

Hi H.,

I have placenta previa with my last baby almost 5 years ago, I was 32 years old.
My hysterectomy the doctor wait 2 months after I have my son and during that 2 months period I was bleeding heavy after I delivery my son, the reason he decide to wait was because he can not do the hysterectomy after he delivery my son, he explain to me that can be dangerous for me and I can have a really bad bleed after the surgery.
I have my son on October 3, and on December 3, I have the surgery which he removed the uterus and 1 ovary and the other one was suppose to help my body with hormones, but 8 months later I have another surgery to removed the 2 ovary.
H., the only thing that I can tell you is be strong and you have your beautiful treasures and in case you have the surgery rest after that and ask some one to help you with your babies, you need to rest a lot after the surgery I am going to be honest with you is painful the first 3 weeks, but you can not be climbing stairs at least for 2 o 3 weeks, not driving, etc.
Let me know what happen.
Doris :)

That's nice of your doctor to let you know it's a possibility, but until the time comes I wouldn't stress too much about it. I know of at least 4 women who had placenta previa and all 4 scenarios turned out just fine. The most recent she had full placenta previa with twins, she had a scheduled c-section, they came 1 1/2 mos early (her doctor didn't think she would even make it that long!), but she had a c-section, everything went great and she's fine. Babies are now 2 1/2 mos old and everyone is doing great. This was also her 3rd pregnancy, she had 2 children before vaginally. I hope everything does turn out for the better for you! Goodluck and congrats on the new baby! I just had a repeat c-section March 4th to another healthy baby girl.
