Anyone Have Non-employee Sponsored Health Insurance?

I am fed up with seeing my daughter for only 3 hours per day during the week. Unfortunately, I carry our family's health insurance through my work (BCBS of MN), so I can't cut my work hours to less than 32/week. My hubby works for a SMALL company which does not offer health insurance. I want to look into getting health insurance for us that is NOT employee sponsored, but don't even know where to begin. I've heard the price we would pay is astronomical, but I need to find out for sure. Plus, I worry about being laid off, I know we would have COBRA for at least a year but I've heard that is VERY expensive. More expensive than a personal plan? Is there even such a thing as a personal insurance family plan? Thanks for any info or suggestions you have.

What can I do next?

Hi Allison,

I work for an insurance company and we offer a high deductible health plan. Let me know if you would like some informaion.

____@____.com

Otherwise, a good starting point is ehealthinsurance.com. There you can compare different health plans right online.

Usually the lower the deductible you choose, the higher the premium is going to be. COBRA is VERY expensive, but it will cover pre-existing conditions which most other companies will not. Good Luck!

I have a friend who sells insurance for Sterling Health Plans. It wouldn't hurt to contact her and get a quote. You don't have to purchase anything and then you'll have great information just in case.

Let me know if you want her information.

Due to the outrageous cost I was paying for my family plan at work, I dropped my two kids and husband (self employed)from my work plan and we bought them each a plan through Blue Cross called "Simply Blue". We pay about $100/mo. for each kid and a little more for my husband. The only thing is,they said it is not a good option for women who are planning to ever get pregnant again. The thing I love is that everything is paid for up to the first $1000. I can't remember all the details but it might be worth your while to check out.
