Anyone Become Allergic to Jewelry, Particularly Rings, After Pregnancy?

After becoming pregnant w/ my first child, I became extremely allergic to my rings. My doctor told me it may go away, but never did. My rings are white gold and he told me I may want to try to reset them in platinum; I really hate to spend the money to do this if the same reaction occurs. Does anyone have any experience w/ this? Any medications work for you?

What can I do next?

Yep had this too with both my pregnancies. It has kind of become a joke around my house when my husband sees me not wearing my wedding ring, he asks me if I might be pregnant. I unfortunately can't offer any advice because I haven't found anything that helps. But just know that you're normal and not alone.

I have platinum rings, and didn't have any problems during preganancy, but I had to quit wearing them the last couple months of pregnancy, and when I tried to wear them again, I would get red raised itchy welts around my finger! I would leave them off, let it all heal, and try again, and it kept doing it. I even tried taking them off every time I washed bottles or dishes, in the shower, anywhere where I might get water or soap residue under the ring that might irritate. It didn't help- I still got the red welts! Finally, now 10 months later,I seem to be having better luck wearing them. Now I can wear them for a couple weeks before I start getting the red marks on my fingers, where earlier I couldn't even wear them for a day! I never took any medication or tried the nail polish thing on my rings, but I am going to take them in for a good cleaning.
So, it definitely can happen with platinum! I'm hoping in another couple months the reaction will be gone and I can wear my rings all the time!
Good luck!! It may just take time- I would give it at least a year to see if the reaction goes away!!

Hi there!
I'm in the same boat as you are. I just had my first baby and once I was able to put my wedding rings back on, I had a severe reaction to them. As it turns out, this is pretty common and doctors seem to think it's a reaction to nickel that's used to harden the metal. Even though there's only a small amount of nickel used in gold and silver, I was surprised how badly my skin was irritated from it. I was told to look for platinum, palladium or even cobalt. It's hard because I LOVE my rings and don't want to give them up... I guess this is just one of the many changes I'll have to get used to from having a baby, but she's worth it all :)

Good luck!

J.,
Yep, I had the same problem throughout my 4 pregnancies. Finally, almost 3 years after the last baby I can wear my rings w/o the ugly red, raised itchy rash.
For me it got so bad a couple of times that I thought I would have to have the rings cut off- the swelling just started w/o warning!

Interestingly I could wear my Grandmother's rings- the jewler said he thinks it was b/c back in the day the gold was not mixed w/ nickle???

It happened to me during my first pregnancy, but it was mostly with gold necklaces. It went away on its own after I had the baby. I just stopped wearing my necklaces for a while...only the cheap fake stuff for me!! LOL! But now, I have no problems and can wear all of it, gold, platinum, silver, whatever with no issues! Good luck!

It's happening to me right now! I have a two year old and I am having my white gold wedding ring coated with zinc today so I can wear it. $50! But oh well. It all started right after she was born! Now my wedding finger looks like it has this horrible fungus growing on it!!!!

I had the same issue with my platinum rings only it started happening after the pregnancy. It last for almost two years (my son is now 2 years old) and oddly enough, now it only happens when I'm about to have my cycle. I have to take them off for a day or two. But no problem with my necklaces, earrings or anything...

Don't pay the money to have them reset. Mine are platinum and I have a reaction to them also (29 weeks pregnant). What I have found is that I have to completely dry my hands after washing. My rings are separate and the soap and water was getting trapped between the rings which didn't help matters. My ring finger was chapping and hurting.

I would suggest you get the gold bond medicated cream to apply overnight and not wear your rings when sleeping. If you have separate rings, I would also suggest you only wear one when you are at home. I wear my engagement ring at home to cut down on the problem I mentioned above. I hope this helps. I did this and it stopped. My mother has also painted the inside of her rings with clear polish and said that helped her. I have not tried this because I am a bit to sentimental to be putting paint on my ring (newly wed last June).

Good luck!

Just remember when you're pregnant your body does strange things!

Give it time & if you still experience this problem at least a year after your pregnancy then have them reset.

I too had the same issue.. My rings made a huge itchy, red mark around my finger from 12 weeks pregnant until about 6 months after I had my daughter. I would always just put clear finger nail polish in my ring. Occasionally, it would still act up then I would just take it off for a few days and reapply the clear polish. I looked into getting my ring coated with platinum but it was to pricey. Eventually one day, about 6 months after my daughter it went away and I was "normal" again. Some people recommend rhodium plaiting but I never did it because I was told the reason that white gold iritated the skin was because of the nickel, and rhodium still has nickel in it. (I did not want to waste the money on risking it) Good luck, be patient it should go away.

You probably have an allergy to nickle. I do. I had to design my wedding ring myself because the one that I orginally picked out was white gold and yellow gold. White gold contains nickel. I'm suprised you have not had a reaction before. I found out about mine when I was young and my parents went to Mexico. They brought me back a neckless purchased on the street that was "real silver" I had a rash from my collarbone to my chin for a week. Never did that again!!! Yellow gold should be fine and silver is always a less expenise choice. You could always try painting your jewerly with clear finger nail polish (I would not try this on things that go in the body such as earrings although I know others that do!!) Anyway good luck
