If you want a non-chemical based way to do it... if you can find where exactly they are entering the house, block the entrance with baby powder. I lived in Las Vegas for several years and they would come in looking for water. I woke up several mornings with my entire hallway floor and kitchen COVERED in ants (it was the most disgusting thing I have ever seen) and the second I found their entrance and blocked it with baby powder... I never had a single issue with ants again. I don't know why this works, but it was amazing!

I agree on the Terro. It's the best bait for ants. You can get it at Lowes.

I had good luck sprinlkling a mix of borax and sugar around where they enter. They take the borax back to the nest and it kills them... worked for me.

I heard aspartame (Equal) is good at killing ants. I don't know if it is the sugar ants or the big ones - can't remember. If it kills ants I wonder what it does to us????

Just yesterday I read on the side of the vinegar box that a wipe-down of your kitchen with vinegar will deter them. I actually think vinegar will help you get rid of food/sweet smells that they're after, rather than killing them. That's just a guess, though. I've also heard of pouring a little "barrier" of cayenne pepper around the entrance, but haven't tried it.

Buy some peppermint oil and soak some cotton balls in it and then put them in places where you think they are getting in. Also spray the backs of counter tops and underneath your cabinets where food crumbs collect. They hate the smell and will stay away. You can plant peppermint or mint plants outside around your home to keep them away to. Sprinkle a small amount of Borax mixed with a bit of sugar near their home or where you spot them too. They take it back to their nests and it kills the colony.

Any of the artificial sweeteners. I'm serious, try it! Pour the powder in the crack where you see them coming and going and you'll never see them again.

And no I don't consume them, knowingly, in my food. But I do have packets in my house for guests who do.

cornmeal. They eat it but can't digest it.

You're probably thinking of Borax. I never had any success with 'home remedies'. It seemed as if my ant population would grow bigger and bigger each year. Once my girls were old enough I broke down and tried the liquid Terro ant baits and they work excellent. Now I go straight for those when I see a few and it wipes them out.
