Almost 30 Weeks Pregnant - Bicornuate Uterus/baby on Small Side of Uterus

Hi Moms! So I'm 29 weeks 5 days along in my 2nd pregnancy. I have a bicornuate (heart-shaped) uterus and the baby is currently head-down and on the left side (which is much smaller than the right side of my uterus). When I was pregnant with my DD, she was always on the bigger right side after about 26 weeks. Because of that, I was able to carry her to almost 37 weeks. I am currently being monitored and watched closely for any signs of pre-term labor.
I was having contractions the other night, and spent 3 hours in L&D at hospital, but they stopped and I'm not dialating.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm concerned that he's going to be born prematurely because my uterus can't stretch as well on the left side and he'll run out of room soon.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Altho I don't have a bicornuate uterus, I've been thru LOTS of pre-term labor with my now 12- and 14-year old kids. There are oral meds they can give you to keep them at bay and also can put you on an IV med in the hospital if need be. But I also want to encourage you that the cutoff for babies doing well used to be 32 weeks when I did ultrasound years ago. It may even be better than that now. So you're almost home free!! Keep thinking positive, pray, stay as mellow as possible....I'll be praying for you, sweet mom. : )

Since this is your second pregnancy your uterus had already stretched so there's more flexibility and room. Both sides have had considerable stretching even if one side has had more. Trust that your uterus will accommodate. Also, a couple ways to keep away from pre-term labor are bed rest and hydration...EXTREME HYDRATION. When you become the least bit dehydrated the concentration of oxytocin can rise in your blood and cause contractions. There are also drugs that help.
Perhaps doing the downward dog to bring baby out of the pelvis and so it can move to the other side could be very helpful. Pelvic tilts (rocking back and forth, raising your pelvis) on a yoga ball or boppy on the bed can help move baby around. Let me know if you would like to chat or ask any questions. I am a doula and on a team with other amazing women. We have just opened out business in San Mateo and would love to help!

Hi Pricilla! I have a pretty significant uterine septum and had my first son prematurely so I understand how you are feeling BUT the good news is you have successfully carried a little one to term and that is a big key to how well you will do this time around. My second baby probably would have gone all the way but had to be delivered at 37 weeks because they did my first c-section vertically so they couldn't let me go past 37 weeks. The doctor explained to me early in my second pregnancy that because I'd been pregnant before my uterus had stretched and was not as tight as with the first pregnancy so there would be more room!
But even worst case scenario you are basically at 30 weeks and that's great. My son was born at 32 weeks and did amazingly well. Just keep an eye on any contractions you might have. Ask what your threshold is before you need to call in. Mine was 5 or more in a hour. That way they can monitor you very closely and even stop the contractions. With my son I was taking a med that is a smooth muscle relaxer (I think it may have been some sort of cardiac med) to keep contractions at bay and it made a huge difference. Best to you!

Hi, i have the same diagnosis as you are. My first pregnancy i carried my son on the right side(bigger side of the uterus) and at 28weeks-i went into labor and because they couldn't stop it,- i delivered him:( Against all odds,- he survived and is now a healthy happy 7year old, first grader:)
My secound pregnancy,- i carried my 2nd baby boy in my smaller part of the uterus(left side), and withought any medical help or any pre-term labor stopping remedies- i carried to a full, 40 weeks term, healthy 6.5pounds baby boy:)!!!!!!
It was not untill after birth of my secound son, that i found out about my condition.... now it was more clear to me why both of my kids was located in particular part of my stomach during pregnancy, and not centered like they were suppose to in normal uterus pregnancies..
Now, i'm pregnant again, with our 3, i'm 20 weeks along, and carrying in my right part of the uterus again. I'm very scarred , because of the previous history of pre-term labor in that part of the uterus..... i don't want to take all those shots, just because i know i can carry the baby to the full term, but there's also this voice that will always be in my head, that'll tell me,- what if.......
I can relate to your condition, and my best advise to you is- PRAY!!!!!!!!!!
Me and my husband prayed sooo hard throughout my whole last pregnancy, and God prevented me from going into early delivery...!!!!!
That's what i do this time around, PRAY ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!!!!
Ofcorse, as a mother- i still worry, it's only natural, but there's also this assurance that i get right after i pray,- that everything is in HIS hands, and He'll make a way!!!!!
God Bless you and your baby tha's inside you, to carry her to full term, and have her on the day that God has planned her to be born on!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi P.,
I too have a BCU and I found a great group on babycenter.com
http://community.babycenter.com/groups/a599925/moms_with_...
There are a lot of people out there who have had pregnancies just like us and they can be very helpful and each pregnancy is different. Hang in there and do what the doctors say. I was only able to hold my pregnancy until 33 weeks and it was b/c she ran out of room. But it is possible for your baby to squish the other side and make more room. Try to relax and not stress out as this could affect the baby just be prepared for the baby to go to the NICU if born early. My doctors did a good job of preparing me and when it happened I was ready for it. Feel free to contact me privately if you would like.
