Allergist Recommendation

Hi,
My 20 month old daughter has (and has had her whole life) all the signs of allergies (eczema, reflux, chronic cough, allergy salute, chronic congestion/runny nose, chronic ear infections etc.). I think she may be allergic to dust mites so I am goign to take action on elimination. I have also cut all dairy out of her diet a while back so I don't think it is that. I want to take her to a specialist because her pediatrician once again (I have gone through 3) is not listening to me and says she is too young to have allergies. I seriously think us Mom's are smarter than most doctors, probably because we actually pay attention to symptoms... anyways, just wondering if anyone had a good pediatric allergist doctor in the Tempe/Mesa/Chandler area they can reccomend.
Thanks ahead of time,
M.

So What Happened?

I decided to take my daughter to her Naturopathic doctor instead of a traditional medical doctor (forgoing the cost). Her regular pediatrician gave me some childrens Claritan and Allegra and there is not way I am putting her on those after what I researched about the side effects. I am kind of fed up with MD's right now... so anyways, her ND was great. He reccomended putting her on a natural vitamin called D-Hist Jr. We had to order it though because no one in the valley has it in stock. Then he also put her on a children's DHA (Nordic Naturals) which he said would help with allergy inflamation. Hopefully once we get the D-Hist going we will be able to tell a difference. If not then I will be taking her back to her ND for some allergy testing. We have also made some changes in our home such as putting an air purifier in her room, washing her bedding & stuffed animals in hot water w/ ecalyptus every other week, grooming our dog more often, and buying natural house cleaners. Thanks everyone for their help even though we did not go see an MD.

Dr. Keahey is WONDERFUL!!!!!!! I brought my 6 month old to her and not only did she help us -- she was so kind and my son took to her immediately, even though he generally has a lot of stranger anxiety. Good luck!

Dr Shimamoto is excellent. He is in the East Valley, he has several offices. It sounds like she has allergies and asthma. I have a 3 year old with asthma and allergies. One thing that REALLY helped is getting rid of all cleaning products and switching over to non-toxic cleaning products. it has been life changing and he has not had allergy meds or an asthma attack in 10 months. Amazing. What we use in our house stays in our air and makes it polluted. It is the best way to change our indoor air and it is not expensive to do it.
I have wonderful recommendations on products as well as great articles I can send you about how to make changes. Let me know if you are interested in me emailing them to you. best of luck.
Also: I thin Dr. Yablonski with Mesa Peds in Ahwautukee is amazing in case you have not tried her.

My sons family dr. in Mesa put him on Allegra just before he turned 2. It has worked well for him. He started at 3/4 a tea spoon 2 times a day that didn't really help so we did 1 teaspoon 2 times a day and it makes a big difference. I'm pretty sure he had allergies all his life. His first Dr. told us the same thing that he was too young but I knew he had allergies his nose was always running all the time.

If you can I would recommend seeing a Naturopath who will test for both immediate and delayed allergies. Most if not all allergists will only test for a more severe and immediate immune system response. They will often tell you they test for more but for some reason they just don't. I have a good Naturopath in Scottsdale (Clark Hansen ###-###-####). But you can find one in your area by checking online. I would ask them their views on food and environmental allergies first. You could always save a little money and remove the top food allergens from the diet (list found online) and keep a food diary and note symptoms day by day. It can show you the foods that are delayed by a day or two. Hope this helps.

When my daughter was very little, she also had the same problems. My doctor recommended that I wait until she was 3 before taking her to the allergist, so I did. When she turned 3, I took her to the Allergy Asthma Clinic in Chandler. They are located on the 101 and Warner. They were wonderful! They tested her and started her on allergy shots, which did not hurt her at all. She is now 6 and no longer has allergies.

I will say this now no one is to young to have allergies. I went thru the same thing with my son. When he was six months old I had him tested for allergies. My pediatrition sent us to her allergist. They deal with kids and she also takes her children there. He was diagnosed with allergies to the cat, dust and pollen. He was put on a very low dose of zyrtec and I give it to him when he needs it. This time of year seems to be the worst for him so he takes it almost every day. In the summer and fall he dosen't take it but every once in a while. I would go with your instinct and see a specialist if you have any concerns. This is the one I took my son to and I will take my baby next month.

Dear M.,

I hear your heart in your message. If you are interested, I would be most happy to have you join me in a free Parenting Seminar: "The JOY of Harmony" where I will address allergies (and so much more) from a non-traditional, heart-and-mind back-to-basics approach. I believe you are right on that the inner wisdom of mothers is far superior than any "expert" anywhere. I would love to share with you (and any others) some amazing new ways of looking at parenting.

I do this ' just because.' Just because I care so very much about children. I will not accept a dime. Just hope to see more smiles in this world. More peace. More relaxed mothers and fathers. And children.

Please call ###-###-#### or visit my website under "seminars".

Much love,

Hi M.,

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's issues. Growing up w/ all that stuff myself, I know what if feels like to be unhealty. But, I also know what if feels like to be healthy -- thank goodness for alternative care!!!

I have some allergy resources on my web site (www.healthyhabits.ws) and HIGHLY recommend converting your cleaning, laundry, and dish care products to non-toxic, environmentally friendly ones. Beleive it or not, this is the #1 culprit for allergies and asthma. A number of my clients have improved or eliminated their eczema, allergies, asthma, and migraines simply by making this change alone. If this change doesn't work, then go to diet. Feel free to call my office for assistance ###-###-####).

Hello M.,

My name is M. and I am an older mother with grown children. I currently go to an allergist myself and had my son, who is now 24, to the same Dr. when he was between 2 and 3 yrs. old. I think it would be a good move to at least call an allergist to get their opinion as to the age benefit.

I go to Arizona Allergy Associates. They have a Mesa location at 4852 E. Baseline Rd. ( between Greenfield and Higley ) ###-###-#### and a Chandler locatation at 705 S. Dobson Rd ( behind Chandler Reg. Hospital ) ###-###-####.

Good luck finding help for you little one. Allergies can be horrible.

M.
