My 8 year old wants an iPod touch for his birthday. I think he is responsible enough for one, he wants to be able to play minecraft on it and other apps. I will probably get him one off ebay but I don't know which generation will be best. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Both of my kids got ipod touches fairly early (around 6) my son ended up getting an ipad mini and my daughter took over my ipad and the touches just sat there. My son actually sold his just recently because he wasn't using it. The mini is great, I actually prefer that over my regular ipad. If you can spare some extra $ the mini with a strong case is what I would suggest. Especially with minecraft. It is a super small screen on the touches. But if not its still a great device, it will just be pushed to the side if the tablets come around in a year or two.

For minecraft I would get an iPad mini. We have both for our kids and they prefer to play on the mini.

Buy new from Apple, spend the extra money for a protection plan, you will be so happy you did when it gets cracked. No matter how responsible your son is it can happened. Apple is A+ at customer care.

My kids have the Ipod Touch 4th gen. We got them on Amazon. My son paid $134 for his slightly used and it works great. A friend hit his hand and caused him to drop it and the screen cracked. No matter which you get, make sure you get an Otterbox for it. It still works great though. We'll get the screen fixed sometime in the next few months.

I am against computer devices for children. Their eyes are still growing and so much computer glare is not good for them.

I've heard good things about iPod touch. My son has a Wii , and uses a family iPad for games, not to mention my iPhone. We hVe cut back on his use of those devises due to eye straining. His eyes get so sensitive, so we have to limit use.

Get him am ipad. My kids have both and the iPads are a million times better for gaming and videos, plus reading and their school games. It's worth the extra cost.

My kids got their iPods at 5, 7, and 7. The iPads were at 6, 8, and 10.

My boys got their iPod Touch at 8 and 9. They'd been begging for Nintendo DSes, but after researching, I found that the iPod Touch would be far more economical and versatile. They've been well loved and used. I absolutely think they are appropriate. You can set limits on them and ensure they don't have access to inappropriate content. There are a ton of great games available for very cheap, and you can just add him to your iTunes account so if you have already purchased some games, you don't have to purchase them again.

Looking back, I honestly wish I'd purchased a Samsung Galaxy devices because the Google Play store has a LOT more than iTunes, but if you're a member of the Church of Apple, you won't regret it.

The touch has such a small screen. For that reason, I would look into a tablet or ipad mini- something with a larger screen. Maybe even a Kindle Fire. Since we got the Kindle, the touch just sits gathering dust. My son (8) plays Minecraft on the Fire, among other things. Hope this helps!

ipod touch is definitely appropriate for that age, in my opinion. I would do the 5th generation if you can swing it, mainly because all of the accessories are made for that one now.
