8 1/2 Mo Old with Canker Sore?

I just noticed a white spot (red around it) in the back of my 8 1/2 month olds mouth. Could this be a canker sore? Is it related to teething? Oddly enough I have a canker sore in the back of my throut right now. How would she get this?

What can I do next?

It could be a canker sore, especially if you share cups or utensils with her. The other thing that came to mind is thrush, but if she hasn't had that before, that would probably be unlikely unless she's been on antibiotics recently. GL keep an eye on it.

I checked into the possibility of oral herpes when my then 3 month old had three sores in his mouth. Both my husband and I have oral herpes, and I was concerned he'd gotten it from us. We hadn't "shared" anything with him, but they looked exactly like our sores. So I looked it up, and sure enough, actual herpes is extremely contagious, and can be spread through saliva (sp?) whether or not you have a sore yourself. But the calming news is that almost everyone ends up exposed to it by the time they are 5yrs old anyway. Some get the sores, some don't, but are still "carriers" of it. So I wouldn't worry too much about it unless there are other symptoms with it like already mentioned. Good luck!

I am dental hygienist. I would say to forget about the small lesion thing in the back of her mouth. It is probably just a saliva duct opening. Unless she has had chicken pox she should not have any canker sores. Check to see if you changes formulas or if you have introduced any new foods. If so, watch to see if that is what is causing it. I still say don't worry.

Yes it could be. They may be triggered by stress, poor nutrition, food allergies. I used to get them all the time. Haven't had one in years. I think mine were due to a lot of stress. Keep an eye on it, you may want to have it checked. I have another suggestion if you want -- : ) I have a liquid herbal formula for viruses that I have used for years, not only with my 2 kids throughout their growing up years, but my clients as well. Please let me know if I can help. I am a Certified Herbalist and would be honored to get some relief for you and your little one.

I wonder if it's not strep. Has she had fever recently? If so, I would take her to the doctor to have a throat culture done to determine whether or not it might be strep.

Another thought might be an allergy. Some infant cereals and formulas contain soy and your child may be allergic to this. Allergies can occur suddenly and are usually outgrown by the time a child is 2-years-old. You should talk to your doctor.

Canker Sores are not contageous. But canker sores can be a form of the herpes virus which she could have if you also carry it. The reason you could both have canker sores is because they can be brought on by certain foods. like high amounts of vitamin C. So if you both have been eating something that can bring on a canker sore you could both have one at the same time. But i would also make sure that it is not thrush because that would be a more common thing for an 8 1/2 month old to get.

it could also be herpangina which is a viral infection that gives you some cold symptoms, maybe some fever, and a sore or two in the back of your mouth. it goes away on its own but can be painful while you have it. both of you having the same thing suggests that this is what it is.

It could be thrush....if you both have it...probiotics should be used for both mother and babe.

could be... by daughter has had them since she was little too... my husband (radiologist) says we transfer the virus that causes those if we sometimes kiss our children near their mouths. However, that could also be thrush. So I would definitely get her checked out at the doctor. Hope thhat helps :o)
