Can anyone help me out with a gift idea? We are traveling to my husband's Uncle's 70th birthday party, and we would like to get him something that is not "gaggy". He is a wonderful person and we would like to give him something that he would appreciate, but don't know what to give!! He loves fishing. Thanks for the ideas!!

What can I do next?

A really good quality bottle of scotch, a first edition copy of a book from an author he loves, a beautiful plant for his garden, a gift certificate to a lawn mowing service, a boxed set of old movies (such as The Dam Busters, The Great Escape etc).

How about a gift card to a local (to him) sports shop where he could purchase his own fishing goodies. He more than likely has the main things like poles, but might get a kick out of buying some new lures, etc.

I don't know what your budget is, but they make some really nice sunglasses especially for fishermen that you can get at sporting goods stores. Or a gift certificate to a place where the fish are biting. My Dad used to charter a fishing boat for a day as a treat when he went to Florida. I am sure there are still people that do that.

For my grandmother's 80th birthday we bought her one of those digital weather stations. My dad installed it for her. We found a large print version. She LOVEs checking on the current weather conditions. It also has the time. She says it has been very helpful and it gets used all the time.

Honestly, I think that at that point in your life you would be looking to not accumulate any more stuff. (Maybe that's because I'm already there.) What about a gift certificate to a favorite restaurant or some kind of service - cleaning, etc. A donation in his name to a charity dear to him might be nice.

We gave my mom a digital picture frame, loaded with every family picture we could find, from every generation.

By 70 you usually want things that make life easier or more comfortable.
Maybe a new light weight fishing chair. Does he read? Magazine subscriptions are usually a good gift for older people. A good table lamp for reading. A big magnifying glass. A new fishing hat. Maybe a new ice chest with a new fishing hat and a tube of sunscreen inside. Find out what bait store he shops at and get him a gift certificate.
