6 Month Old Spitting up All the Time

My six month old has been spitting up since birth. I know that this is normal, but it sometimes worries me because he does it quite frequently. He's been eating solid foods now for the past couple of weeks, and I thought that maybe the solids would stay down better. However, even after it's been three hours since he last ate, he's still spitting up, and the spit up is even the color of the solid food (green, orange, yellow) that he last ate, instead of just the milky white of breast milk. He spits up when he's moved from one position to another and when he's been on his belly for a long time, which sometimes makes tummy time difficult. I mentioned this to his pediatrician, last week, and she said that there's a muscle in his abdomen/belly that needs to strengthen, still. Once it's stronger, he won't have such an issue with spitting up. She said that since he's not fussing after he spits up, it's not really bothering him. My mother and mother-in-law call it his "release valve" from overeating. However, how can it be that if he ate three hours earlier? He's currently only 30th percentile in weight (but 70th percentile in height). His doctor didn't seemed worried about that, but I just wonder if he's getting enough nutrition. Plus, I'm starting to get tired of cleaning up all the white/orange/green/yellow messes. Anyone else having/had this problem? What did you do?

Our oldest daughter had this reflux when she was born up until her 1st birthday. She's now going on 15 and eats fine. After an upper GI determined the valve at the top of her stomach wasn't developed enough , we were given a foam cheese shape wedge with a pocket stiched in it for her to lay in on her stomach after she was burped after feedings . By putting her in the 45'angle it helped keep her food down and relieved some pressure on her stomach. I lost a fair amount of clothing as well , so can only recommend doubling up your burping blanket and wearing stuff you won't miss if can't get the formula , strained carrots, or combo meals out with a color safe bleach. Once Krista started keeping a greater portion of her meals down ,the amount of feedings in a day decreased because she was full longer than having lost most of her meal on me.God bless you with grace and paitence with this endeavor.
I pray it passes soon for you.

Hi A., I know exactly how you feel! My little one spit up all the time just like your baby. No matter what I did, sat her up for a 1/2 hour after eating, put her in her car seat, etc. it didn't help. I talked to my doctor at every check-up and she assured me that as long as my daughter was gaining weight and didn't seem affected by it, it was fine. She did outgrow it around 7 or 8 months. I'm suggesting to just be patient and keep the burp cloths within reach. I always put my daughter on a blanket and she usually had a bib on to protect her clothes. Not that it always worked but it made life a little cleaner. If you are concerned talk to your dr. again. It's their job to make sure your child is healthy. Best of luck!

Unfortunately, I don't have any advice on the spitting up, except time. Is it a small amount or most of his food? My daughter did projectile spit up for a couple of weeks after she was born. She would eat 2-3 oz & most of it would come up. This only happened once a day, but always after laying down. I found that I had to leave her sitting up or at least elevated some almost all the time. As for your son's weight, try not to sweat it. My son was only 30-40% for several years. At 6 months, he was only 16-17 pounds. My 3 month old probably has that beat. He finally hit the 50% this year & he's 4. I figured that as long as he was eating well & he was,
everything was fine. He was very active morning to night.

I now have a healthy 2 year old that used to spit up just like you are describing. She was very gassy with quite a few burps and spitting up after each feeding ever since we brought her home. She continued spitting up when we started solids and carrots would come up hours after she ate them. (all over the carpet since she rolled everywhere!)
I was also told not to worry and since your little boy doesn't seem bothered it probably isn't acid reflux. I am not sure he is "overeating" and I would continue feeding him as you have and try to cover the carpet and other furniture!:)
Best wishes!
