My 6 month old bundle of joy is on the chubby side... 20lbs. She's always been this way. Although her doctor isn't too concerned about her wieght he did say we needed to try and start cutting back those calaries a little. Any suggestions? She's already eating solid food (no meats, desserts or anything fancy, just fruits and veggies). I try to play with her, get her active too. She's in the 60% for her height, at 26 inches (she had been in the 75%)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your tips and suggestions. My doctor just mentioned it in passing... and he and I know that she will slim down when she starts "moving"

I agree with the other posts that you don't need to worry. My son was always in the 90th on height and weight and now is in the 70th on weight and my doctor was concerned. But as others have said, his dad was a small kid and didn't get his size on him until high school so he may just be thinning out plus he is active! My cousin's son was off the charts for weight for the longest and on the shorter side and now that he is one and walking he has thinned out. I would just enjoy that adorable baby fat because once it's gone, it will be gone for good!! I know she is just adorable, I love the little chunkers ;)

What is important is for her height and weight percentile to match, which means she is the right weight for her height. So if she is 90% in weight but only 50% in height, you may have some concern, but if they are the same, she is preportioned correctly.

A., I'm uncomfortable with your doctor telling you to watch the calories with a six month old!!!!!!!!

My baby boy topped the charts at that age, too. He was our little Michelin man, and I loved every little roll of baby pudge. He evened out when he started walking, and now he's a normal kid hovering right around the 50-60%tile mark.

Please don't put your little girl on a baby diet. Just know that when the time comes for her to get really mobile (super crawling or walking), it will even out.

I have two girls that are a year apart. One was always in the 20% and one was always in the 90% group. They are still that way. The younger one who was the chunky one is starting to thin out now but she is still just solid when you pick her up. They eat the same exact thing. It's just how they are and we love them for it. My oldest daughter who is 3 struggles to keep her 2t shorts up and we struggle to get the younger girls 5T shorts on. My doctor has never said anything. They eat healthy and I know the younger one will continue to slim down as she grows. So don't worry about it. Just feed your baby healthy foods and let her be what she is for now. If she was older (7 or 8) with these problems than it might be something to work on but just let her be a baby for now.

When she starts crawling and moving a lot, she will burn it off. As long as you are feeding her healthy stuff and she isn't having problems, she will be fine!

At least it is her weight...my son was off the charts with his big ole head at 12 months! But he is a happy, healthy baby and that is what matters. (He is 18 months old now, and all the chunky rolls are withering away and his head isn't so big now)

My son was also in the 90% percentile, he eventually evened out. I am sure your DD will do the same!

Maybe I can help show how it all depends on the doctor.

My daughter was 8 lbs and 13 oz when she was born. A nice plump baby at birth, but slimmed down as she grew. At 4 months the doc started asking if she was eating as much as she wanted. My daughter was in the 25-30% in weight & height. She was growing consistently and, yes, she ate as often as she wanted since I didn't believe in making newborns wait until I was ready to eat. She was breastfed and drank formula as well. My doctor said she should have doubled her weight by 4 months. That's the "standard" they look for. This meant that instead of 12 lbs she should have weighed 18 lbs at 4 months, which means she was supposed to weigh in at 22.5 lbs at 6 months if she continued to gain weight at that rate. I explained that I was a very thin until age 20, as were all of my aunts, mom, and sisters, and that was with me out-eating my dad 2 plates-to-one at the dinner table (I weighed 103 at graduation because I was always bicycling, skating, running, etc.), my husband was put on a malted milkshake high-calorie diet in middle school because he had such a hard time gaining weight, and his sister was a very petite thing as well all of her life. The doctor finally stopped asking once she started to eat solids and I would always have a list of the things my daughter loved. She didn't weigh in at 22 lbs until almost 2 years old and I think she was supposed to weigh about 30. If I remember correctly, they want the kids to weigh about 10 lbs per year of age, until they reach about 3. Then they start talking about how they shouldn't be so overweight. My son is 5 (will be April 30) and weighs 34 lbs, my daughter is 8 1/2 and weighs 54 lbs. Yes, they look thin (can't count their ribs) so people ask how I keep the weight off of them. I don't. My kids don't sit around eating all of the time, but I don't have a problem giving them donuts and stuff. They don't sit around playing video games or watching tv all of the time, but we do have our video game/ movie marathon lazy weekends. We have family game night. We read together. I don't have them constantly exercizing, but they love to run, jump and play. They play on the swingset, they play tag, they jump on the neighbors' trampoline, they ride their bikes, they rollerskate.

I know doctors and fitness enthusiasts don't like to hear it, but somepeople are built thin and others are heavy (like I am now - changing my eating habits, the walking and biking is helping me though).

Your daughter's 6 months old. If her weight begins to make life difficult for her, such as she can't discover her toes or she can't turn herself over, then yes there may be a problem. But if she's reaching those milestones at a good average pace for her, then give her time to get walking and then see how much baby fat she wears off.

My friend's baby is a big baby. Her doctor was telling her what your's is telling you. She weighed less than my daughter at birth, but weighed in at about 20 lbs at 4 months. I could barely carry her for long. She is 8 months old now and is 30" tall (she is up to her Mom's mid-thigh!). Her Mom is just about 6' tall. So that probably has a lot to do with it. Not sure on her weight since they live in Missouri now. However, at 8 months she is cruising the furniture. My daughter didn't do that until 11 months!

Give your daughter time. That's my advice.

I wouldnt worry about it at this age. She is too young to be watching her calories. She eats when she is hungry and once she gets to moving around more they will shed or she will stretch.

I wouldn't worry about her weight. Both of my boys were like that before they started crawling and walking and the dr said they were perfect. I'm not a dr, but I've never heard of one saying to watch the calories of a 6 mo old! As long as your not feeding her a bunch of junk she'll be fine. Are you you breastfeeding? Both of mine were breastfed, my 2nd was the cubbiest and he was breastfed until he was about a year old...tends to make them a bit chunkier =)

Once she starts crawling, and especially walking, she'll thin out...don't worry!

Hi A.,

Like yours, my little girl was a bit on the chubby side when she was around that age. She started wearing 18 months in clothing around 6 months old. Your doctor is right to not be very concerned. When she starts walking and moving around more she will start to slim down a bit. My daughter is now 2...going on 3 and STILL wears clothes that she wore when she was 6 months old. She weighs 26 pounds and although she is still in the 90% range, she isn't chubby anymore and her doctor hasn't ever mentioned her weight as being an issue.

For now, just focus on giving her all the love and cuddling that you can. When she starts walking and losing her baby fat, she will have no time left for your kisses....

But what about her height? Is she proportionate? That's what our pediatrician has said. We have two of our kids who remain since infancy in the 95th percentile for weight AND height. And then we have our little Liv - petite, shorter - 25-30th percentile consistently. Go figure! :-)

At this stage, it's sure nothing to worry about. I'd maybe switch from high cal desserts and snacks to something like fresh fruits and low fat wheat crackers. I started my kids on healthy treats as babies, and they still choose carrots and brocolli and fresh fruit over cookies! It's a good trend to teach her. :-)
