6-Year-old Has Hives

It's been an interesting week at my house. First my 6-year-old daughter had a fever on Sat night, Sunday & Monday okay, Tuesday 103 fever. Weds 101 fever, and Thursday okay. Friday she woke up with itchy legs, and it ended up being hives that spread and got redder within minutes. Gave her some medicine and they disappeared. Went to bed without any marks on her legs and today she said they itched, and they got redder and spread within minutes. What in the world is going on? Has anyone experienced this? Do you think the earlier fever and current hives are connected?

What can I do next?

Oh boy! Hives! I have suffered from them regularly for about 12 years now. Has anything at all changed in her environment? It could be something as simple as a food or detergent, hair products, anything. I would suggest you get her in to see an allergist as soon as you can. They may do a skin test which is horrible or an elimination diet, also very horrible, but the sooner you figure out what is causing the hives, the better. I'm lucky enough to be allergic to my own hormones so there's not much I can do except take a bunch of benadryl. Feel free to message me back if you have any questions. Getting control of hives can be a long and frustrating process.

I have a 6 yr-old who gets hives every time that he has a fever (not just a small case either, he has them from the top of his head to the bottom of his feet)....Dr. says that it is just something he is going to have to live with. He also said that if I use Medicine with Ibuprofen, like Advil, the hives will only get worse. Usually takes about a week for them to clear up. Best thing would be to take her to the doctor and make sure it is nothing viral.

I have had them both of my kids my eldest daughter and my son. Both of my kids had them and I took them to the doctor and they couldn't tell me why they broke out in hives. My son had hives so bad that his eyes were swollen almost shut. They just said keep giving them benadryl. My son has been on a stronger med because he had them so bad. They said keep a journal with everything that they have done throughout the day like what kinds of food they eat to going outside and playing to swimming and even sunblock. Hope this helps.

Does she have the rash on her face? If she does she may have Fifth Disease. My son had that at Christmas. It started out with a fever and a week later he broke out in a rash. His cheeks looked like they had been slapped a lot, which is apparently the sign for Fifth Disease. I am not sure if this is what your daughter has but thought that I would post it, just in case.

Hi J., the only thing I could offer is have you changed laundry detergents, soap of any kind, shampoo, sunblock, how about food did you go anywhere different to eat a different restaurant than usual, maybe a neighbors house, anything at all. has she been outside maybe got into poison ivy, oak or anything else like this.

My husband is allegic to certain detergents a fabric softner and so is my youngest daughter. We have to use All and Downy fabric with no additives. Hope this helps W.

I think it sounds like the strep rash....comes with strep throat sometimes...their throat doesn't always hurt, but the fever and rash are a pretty good sign...I'd take her to the doctor....

Hope this helps!

I had Hives here a while back, and I had to go see my doctor 3 times before they EVER cleared up. Cleared it up with Claritin, but I had no fever with mine. Have you looked up Scarlet Fever? Just curious, with the rash and fever sounds a bit like thats what it could be. Does her throat her or anything.

It could be roseola. My daughter had that last summer, but the rash showed up on her toes and face. I would definitely take her to the doctor.

This sounds like Strep (sp?) Throat to me. The fever then the rash. My son had a virus last week He had 103 fever on Tuesday and Weds. No rash and now he is better. But the the summer and the out doors, it could be anything. Good luck !!!

My children have done the same thing before and it has ended up being a virus. You might want to confirm this with your doctor. If it is a virus, than all you can do is treat the symptoms (fever) and increase fluids. Then let nature take its course.
Good luck!

Hi J.,

It sounds like she has an overload of antibodies in her system. You got a lot of advise here so I will just keep it short and say you should definately take her to the doctor. My son got a rash and it ended up being staff infection from a scratched insect bite. It doesn't sound like that is what your daughter has because it goes away after medicine, but with rashes it is best to let the doctor make the decision. I poo-poo'd my son's rash off and he ended up in the hospital for 4 days and then at home for a week with an i.v. and home health care. Not to scare you, just to caution you. I believe everything will turn out fine.
