I wondered what people are using for their kids after 40 lbs... wanting a 5 pt harness and didn't know what options are out there for the longest use (when do they stop using car seats?)

So What Happened?

I'm still going to check my responses... but i've read now that the REGENT cannot be used in Honda CRV, in that the upper belt only holds 40 lbs and regent requires 60 lb to be installed correctly : (

I LOVED the Graco Turbobooster. It has a back, but then when they're bigger, you can remove the back so it is just a booster. My son used it from when he was about 3 or 4 until just now when he turned 8. It uses the regular seat belt and is very affordable.

Hi S.,

I'm assuming your 1st is going to outgrow his/her seat soon....to safely keep your kiddo harnessed in a 5pt (which is by far much better than moving into a belt positioning booster too early) I'd suggest either the Britax Marathon/or Radian 65 both go to 65 pounds, the Britax Regent (or the new Britax Frontier coming out this summer- this looks wonderful, it will harness to 80 pounds then become a belt positioning booster, the Graco Nautilus is new and getting great reviews, it harnesses to 65 pounds and then becomes a good booster. The Cosco Apex 65 is okay, but needs high seat backs/head rests to be used. Depending on how old your first child is I would recommend certain seats over others.

You child should continue to be in some type of seat most likely until they are about 10 years, 4'9'' is the government guidelines....that being said, keeping them in a 5pt harness is the safest option, moving to a high back booster is only recommended for children who are at least 5, well over 40 pounds and are able to SIT STILL, and not play with the belt every single time.....seat belts and young children in an accident don't always get along...which is why the belt positioning boosters are important to properly spread out the impact forces...I plan on keeping my DD in her Marathon until next year when she's about 5 1/2 then she'll go to a seat like the Regent that is a 5 pt harness to 80 pounds- and I don't care that all of her friends at age 4 are in backless boosters... I know she is safe and that is what matters, not the convenience of not having to strap her in (I've heard that a lot- well, how about the inconvenience if your child's in an accident and has permanent injuries.....

Sorry so long but I feel that too many parents (I'm not implying you S.) don't ask these questions and just read the boxes at their local store without doing a little research...those low back boosters that say 30- 100 lbs are not appropriate for 30 pounders!

Great question! Email me if you want ideas where to buy online that is reliable/cheapest.

Hi S.,
We have a Britax Regent for my older son. It goes to 80lbs and it has a 5pt harness. It can convert to use with just the seatbelt, but we plan to use the harness for quite some time. We did a lot of research when looking for the next seat. I have been happy with both of the Britax seats that we have invested in (we also have the roundabout for my younger son)

The law in Illinois is that your child needs to be in some sort of safety seat until they are age 8 AND 80lbs.

My little guy HATED the carrier seat, so we moved him to the Roundabout (convertible seat) when he was just 3months old and needed a new seat for my older son.

Do your research and be an informed consumer.

I have heard GREAT things about the Britax Regent. I think it goes up to 80 lbs. I just saw it at Babies R Us and I def. plan on using it myself when we are ready!!

I have a Sunshine Radian and also a SafeGuard Go car seat---both 5 point harness and latch system into car. SafeGuard turns into a booster. I got them at elitecarseats.com and can't say enough good things about the seats or website service.

We just bought my son the Cosco Apex something or other. It is a high back booster with the 5 point harness that goes up to 65 pounds. He is 4 and just hit 40 pounds and I dont' feel comfortable having him in just a booster with a seat belt yet. I was surprised that there are very few high back boosters that have the 5 point harness that goes beyond 40 pounds. Anyway, we are pleased with the seat so far.
