I have a 4 year old daughter who is always complaining about her feet hurting or her knees. I took her to the Doctor a while back and he said its because she is flat footed. So he wanted us to put some arch support in her shoes. And we did but its not helping. All day she complains she hurts and last nite starting at midnight she cried because her knees hurt. The Doctor says its not growing pains but doesnt seem concerned. I give her motrin, tylenol but nothing seems to help with the pain. Her feet and knees hurt everyday but at night seems to be worse, IS this growing pains? Flat feet? should i take her to the Dr again? I feel so bad for her cause she is in pain all the time and im starting to feel sorry for myself cause because of lack of sleep!!LOL
Any ideas????

So What Happened?

Well I called my Daughters Dr today and talked to the nurse and she said that its probably just growing pains, so not to worry. But if she starts limping or i see any redness on her joints to call and they will see her. I tried to tell her that this has been going on pretty much on and off since she learned to walk, ANd yesterday she complained her elbows hurt ( thats a new complaint) but today she wouldnt walk at walmart cause her feet hurt. The Dr could care less and I know there is No way i can get her into another dr here in Casper cause if you are a patient of one Ped the other Peds wont see you, I have tried before with no luck, so now what do I do? I feel like the Dr is not taking my conerns seriously and I got sorta short with the nurse today in sheer frustration but maybe that only made matters worse????

I have 4 children and they all went through the same thing. I found that a heating pad or something warm on the area really helps. The Dr. told me to give Tylenol but that didn't always work. I really do think it is growing pains.

All I do for it is give tylenol and rub their feet and move their toes around just in case its a cramp. Other than that Im confused also. so try that and let me know if it works! :) My Email is ____@____.com

I was the same way when I was younger and i started to put a pillow under my legs to sleep... that seemed to help me so much. I would say if nothing will help soon that I would take her to the foot dr and see what he says. But it is really important for her to wear the arches. It will almost train her feet to have an arch.

I don't know IF this will help any. But have you had her tested for stuff like Cerebal Palsy (C.P.) or Muscular Dystrophy (M.D.)? Try looking on webmd & see IF they have anything. But I'd also check the part on C.P. & M.D. You could also get a few / couple of other opinions. Just a few thoughts.

I feel so bad for her when I was little I had bad growing pains at night. I would demand something be done for her or see if your insurance will let u switch doctors. If the other doctors won't see her try to go somewhere else even if it means u have to drive aways away cuz she is in pain. Hope she gets better.

You might want to try a warm bath before bed with some epsom salts in the water....or a warm compress on her joints when they ache. The worst case is that there are some diseases that can cause this kind of joint pain. If nothing seems to be working i would think about maybe taking your daughter to a DR that specializes in childhood development.

I have a 5 year old that has the same problem, my five year old wakes up and she grabs and claws at her legs and feet while she is crying. Try getting a hot towel and putting it on her legs and feet at night when it starts to hurt really bad, make sure that she is taking a vitamin on a daily basis and it should help with it too.

Hello A.!
I'm a fairly new mom, but do have a suggestion. If I were in this situation, I would get a second opinion. I'd recommend taking your child to a Podiatrist. I work at a medical school with a podiatric program. I use to go to my family doctor, but once I talked to the dean at the University about my foot problems, he recommended I see one of the podiatric doctors on campus.

See someone who has experience with feet. If you've already seen a podiatrist, see another and get another opinion.

Good luck!

Hi A.!
For her sake, please take her to a specialist. One of my daughters went through the same thing. Our doctor told us it was just growing pains. I went to a pediatrician and a foot doctor and was referred to the Mayo clinic. Unfortunately, some doctors don't bother to refer patients on to specialists when they should. It seems to me that these doctors, good or bad, believe in shrugging things off that they know nothing about. That's not good. Maybe it is growing pains, but if it's keeping her up crying, well, I'd venture to say it's something else. Ended up with my daughter that her little body was growing way too fast to keep up with her bone growth. So her muscles were being stretched beyond normal, thus causing her pain. Had I took the first doctor's advise and just shrugged it off to growing pains, she would've endured more pain for a longer amount of time. The specialists worked with both of us and she was relieved of her pain. She is 13 now and came out of it with flying colors. It was a very trying time for all of us, as no mommy likes to see their child suffer. When they hurt, we do too. So take all the wonderful advise from all these other mommies and see a specialist. Worst case scenerio....she has growing pains, so maybe you're out a little time going to someone else, at least you'll know for sure what you're dealing with and you'll be given something to help relieve it. You won't be any worse off than now, and your little one will start sleeping through the night.......and so will you. I'm praying for strength and sleep for you and comfort for your little one. God bless!

Hi A... =) I personally would try for a second opinion, seeing as how your doctor is'nt giving you quite the help you need...I to live in Casper, and sometimes it's hard to get JUST the care for your child that you would give..I wish you the best of luck and hopefully they can help her soon..that has got to be so very difficult for you both.

You could take her to a different Dr. in a different town if no other peds will look at in Casper. I was that way as a child and I had muscle tone defects. You could use muscle relaxing creams (arthritis creams) and see if that helps....it sure did for me!
Good luck!

My daughter actually went through that same thing at the age of 6 and it was growing pains.. Take her to a foot doctor if you haven't at least take her to a different doctor for a second opinion.. Try heating pads or those thingies you get at the store for pain that are like heating pads but cloth.. She will grow out of it.. I will keep you and your child in my prayers and I hope you get some sleep soon.. If you haven't used the nighttime children's motrin--try that--it may help you get some sleep.. Good Luck!!

Well, since no one has mentioned my idea, I figured I let you know. I am 53 yrs old and went through that all my life. There are times when the sheets touching my feet and legs made them hurt. I finally just quit asking for help. Then one day my daughter, who has had the same problem all her life, got diagnoised with Fibromyalgia (Fibro). I went to the doctor and they said that I had it, too. He's a great web site about it. http://www.fmnetnews.com/ It is written by a doctor that has Fibro. I don't know if your daughter is too young for a diagnosis, but if you want to pursue it, go to a rheumatologist. It is related to arthritis. Some call it arthritis of the muscles.
I really don't wish this upon my worst enemy, but if it is, at least you know.
