3D Ultrasound

Congrats on your babies-to-be!! How exciting!! I had a 3D ultrasound with my son and it was totally worth it. I didn't do the kind that you pay for (I imagine that would be even better). There is a practice down in Bethel Park (can't remember the name of it now) but they do the 3D ultrasound as part of your regular 18-week ultrasound - so we went there (even though we live in Wexford!!). So we didn't get the 30 minute video that you get from the ones you pay for - but we got a short video and 4 great photos.

With my first child, my insurance actually covered the 3D ultrasound, so I got it done. I don't know how much getting one done actually costs, but I will say it was very cool. The detail was amazing and I had a picture to show all the relatives that actually looked like a real baby. With the regular ultrasound (which was all I got with my second child), the picture generally just looks like a baby-shaped blob. Seeing your baby for the first time is always great, but it does take the wind out of your sails when you take the picture home and realize you can't remember which area the tech told you was the head. With the 3D, we took home a picture of my son sucking his thumb in utero. You could actually see the lips and nose, the shape of his eyes and his tiny little hand. So yes, if you can afford it, there really is a world of difference between the two.

ABSOLTUTELY!! Best time to go is between 28 and 32 weeks (before they look a little too "alien" and after it gets too crowded). I'm not sure what the recommendation is for twins. I went to www.insight4dimaging.com. Henriette, the owner, has specials during the week (really good discounts). You can also bring 10 other people and/or send it out over the internet in real-time.! It is GREAT for other sibs and fathers to bond. I am definitely looking forward to my appointment next month (btw, Henritte usually spends way longer in there than it says..she is a sweetheart!)

What is the purpose for having a 3D Ultrasound?

I had a 3D ultrasound done with my first as a Christmas present to my husband and parents. It was cool, but I didn't think it was really worth the money. It is definitely different than a regular sonogram, but you can't tell facial features or anything like that. I think the 3D technology in general is cool and you can check out some pictures online to get an idea of what it looks like, but I don't really think there is a big difference from baby to baby.

My Mother gave me one as a gift when I was pregnant with my daughter. It really was amazing! There is so much more detail. The pictures we have from the ultrasound are remarkable and she looked just like her ultrasound pictures when she was born. If you can afford it, then I don't think you will regret it one bit.

i had one done at 26 weeks and it was amazing, they took a picture of her face and the detail is incredible, I cried. i dont know how much they cost though, mine was paid for due to a potential problem in my pregnancy, so im not sure if it worth the money, but its really breath taking to see!

You can deffinately see features better with a 3d ultra sound, but looking back would've rather saved the money for something else. Some of the images didn't turn out so good and kind of looked a little creepy.

We had twins and went to Maternal Fetal Medicine in Harrisburg where they did them for free. Are you going to be going to a high risk center where they might just do them anyway? I found them interesting but wouldn't have paid for them. They certainly are different from a regular sonogram. Maybe it's because we weren't paying, but they could never seem to get a good view of both babies at the same time (one always looked a little warped). Once the babies were born they didn't seem to look much like the 3D images either.

I haven't had one myself, but I've seen them, and they are INCREDIBLE. It's like taking a photograph of the babies before they are born. I was amazed at the technology....I wouldn't see the point in having more than 1 of them, but certainly worth the money, in my opinion, to do it once!!!

You may want to check with your insurance company b/c generally having multiples (or being 34+) is considered "high risk", which means that insurance co.'s usually cover more! I'm assuming you've already had your 20 week sono. so I'm not sure how you might justify going back, but it's all worth a try b/c the 3D is really cool. Very fun to look back and see that they looked exactly the same in the womb - of course!
Another angle that I did when we lived in Vir. Beach, VA. was to go to the local Community College, where they have classes for students to become Sonographer Techs. They took pregnant volunteers for the students to learn or test on, and I walked away with more 3D pictures than I knew what to do with!! You might want to call local CC's! Good luck.

I had a 3D ultrasound with my first as part of my regular 20 wk scan at the doctor's office and it was amazing! Its so cool to see their little face, and then so surprising once they're born to see how accurate the images were. I'm hoping they give me another 3D this time around, but if not, I'm seriously considering paying for one. If you really dont have the money, then obviously dont do it, but if you have a little extra then I say go for it.

I had a 3D ultrasound done with my 2nd pregnancy. I had to pay for it since my doctor didn't schedule one, as they just did the regular 2D ultrasounds in the office. The place I went to is in Malvern, PA - close to Philly, but it was worth the drive.

I got a photo CD of almost 100 pictures a DVD of the entire ultrasound, plus they printed out several pictures for me. The staff is friendly and well knowledgeable. I would recommend them to anyone!!

I tried it with my third child who was born last year and it was awesome. We got a package that had pictures and a video (both VHS and DVD) and it was absolutely money well spent. It wasn't terribly expensive, either. We went to ProView Ultrasound which is in the office complex behind Eat and Park on Oregon Pike.

This is 'not' covered under medical insurance ? odd???? Is the Dr. ordering this test ? Is their a twin issue you need to know before delivery ?
If you simply just want to'peek' and the dr. has no worries ...
*** SAVE YOUR $ for DIAPERS ., henceforth, if the dr. suspects an issue with 1 or 2 of your babies than .......
SPEND THE MONEY to ' prepare you ' and family for nic unit , get baby sitters lined up , etc ....
you look healthy to me ... built to carry babies .

Not sure if this was mentioned already, but not every baby is a good 'candidate' (for lack of a better word that I can't seem to think of right now, haha). We asked about it for our son, but he was a total spazz the entire pregnancy and we were told that if he's not sitting still, they can't get any images, so it would be a waste of time/money.
