3 Month Old Just Introduced Formula and Hasn't Pooped in Almost a Week!

Hi Moms,
I know that it is normal for a baby to not poop every day at 3 months and also to not poop for a few days when first given formula. My son has exclusively had breast milk. We give him 1-2 bottles of formula a day since Monday and he hasn't pooped since! My pediatrician said to either give it until Monday, stick a thermometer w/ lots of vaseline up his behind and try to stir things up in there (gently of course) or use a little bit of a glycerin suppository. I don't really want to do any of those much less the last two! Anyone run into this and have any ideas how to get the poop to come? He's a fussy baby as it is so I can't really tell if it's bothering him. He's definitely farting a ton throughout the day and it smells horrible. Thanks ladies!

What can I do next?

Give the baby water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also look on Web Med MD online and type in constipation for a newborn, and you will get all sorts of MEDICAL advice...

Hi C.,

If possible, take him of the formula and go back to breastfeeding. If not, try changing the formula.

You can also give him gripe water- this works wonders with my daughter. Help him excercise- hold his feet and cycle them in the air. Massaging the tummy also helps (you should rub it gently clockwise).

Good luck!

Hi C.-
Just went through this about a month ago. Our doctor told us to try baby white grape juice. We gave him 1 to 2 ounces a day and this helped. We also switched his formula to Similac Isomil Advance Soy Formula. In some of my reading it said to be carefully not to misjudge constipation. When your baby finally does go, if it is not hard and pebbley it might not be constipation. He might just need some time to adjust his system to the breast milk and formula combination. Which was what turned out to be with my son. It does not seem to bother him and he only goes 2-3 times a week. We mix the bottles half breast milk and half formula. Hope this helps. Have a good holiday!

Maybe the formula is too gassy (causing farting) and has too much iron (causing constipation). Ask the pediatrician about trying a different formula.

C.-

The problem may be too much iron. My children hada the same difficulty and that was it.

This happened to my son at 4.5 months or so. I used half of the glycerin suppository, as per the ped recommendadtion after the 3rd day. All worked out fine after that. I think it happened one more time after that, and by then I had introduced him to solids and gave prunes. I also added a little bit of prune juice to his milk daily to keep him regular. My ped also suggested either the prune juice or flax seed powder added to his milk. He must be uncomfortable, I would try the last 2 options if I were you.

Hey C.,

Does the formula have extra iron because that can definitely constipate babies. Check with your doctor but when my son was little we used to give them a little sugar water and that used to help him to go to the bathroom. He also was very constipated as a baby. Using the thermometer, or the suppositories will not hurt as long as you use it gently but it is only a temporary solution. I know with breastfed babies you are not supposed to give water, but maybe with the formula the doctor will allow a little. Once you put him on solids you can introduce prunes and diluted prune juice. Good luck!!
