My 20 month old son was at my husband's parents house where my MIL was giving him a bath. My DS told her "poo-poo" and pointed to the toilet over and over. She got out a potty seat that she has had since her other grandkids were young and put him on there for fun. Well he went #1 and #2 in no time! I figured it is a total fluke- but he has been bugging me about the potty for a few weeks so I figured I'd by a potty seat for fun- just to have around. Well he saw it today and told me poo-poo. SO I put him on there and sure enough #1 & #2 again! I figure it is waaaay too early. Most boys I know were potty trained closer to 3!! Should I make an attempt at this or just keep it as a fun every once in a while thing for now?? How do I know when he is really ready?

both my boys showed an interest at this age and younger. they both were toilet trained by 24 months before they could really talk. My only advice is be patient. I would go ahead and potty train while he is interested if he looses interest back off then when he's interested again move forward.

don't push too hard but absolutely use rewards. for my older one it was a sticker on a blank piece of paper or a mini M&M, my other was dried apricots, some use money a penny for #1 and silver coins for #2 whatever is easy cheap and interesting for your child. It is a process but no progress is wasted so if he does great then wants to cool it for a week you usually pick back up where you left off.
good luck with your very smart little guy!

yes he's ready. I think parents nowadays put off training a child, especially a boy... so go for it.

It's not to early, my first son was potty trained at 20 months, my second son was 19 months, I know a lot of people believe boys are harder, but as a mom of 2 boys first both potty trained before they were 22 months I have to , my dissagree. reward your son every time he uses the potty, take him shopping and let him pick out his big boy underwear
my boys are 25 and 22 years old now all grown but i remember the day they picked out their big boy underwear my daughter to at 20 months, we went to lunch, i made it a celebration. J. L.
