2 Year Old Fasting

My son has been sick for about a week now. It's a stomach virus. At first it was pretty gross but he's leveled out now and doing well. He hasn't had a fever in two days but he hasn't wanted to eat AT ALL today. He's been drinking fluids occasionally and I gave him some Pedisure but he only sipped it. I know kids can do this when they are sick but are there any meals you guys can think of that would entice him to take a few bites? He's belly's feeling better so I don't need BRAT diet stuff but also nothing too strong in flavor either.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thanks for all the advice! Last night out of the blue he asked for a banana and stole a cracker from his Daddy so I felt a little better. Today I set him up with Pediasure if he wants it along with gatorade and water. It's always nice to hear you're not the only one that's gone through this so I really appreciate the responses!

I wouldn't do anything. If his body is saying dont eat, then let it go. He will eat when he's ready and hungry. His body knows what is best for itself.

As a mother to two little boys who were sick alot. I have this advice for you. Don't rush the food. Sometimes it takes a couple of days before their tummies are starting to really feeling back to normal persay. He may say his tummy is feeling better which may be the case but it may not be back to normal yet. Let him be the guide. Let him tell you what he wants and when he is ready. Just be aware that he isn't going to starve, he will eat when he gets hungry.

Good luck.

Good day,
Have you tried a hot cereal of any kind? How about Mac & Cheese? I often give my girls peanut butter and tell them their bodies need the proteins in it to heal, plus they like it with jelly on soft bread. I will pray your son will feel better quickly. There have been times I just had to wait out the flu/cold until they ate on their own- but gave them plenty of juices! God bless you both!
Sincerely,
Kathy N.

C.,

As long as he is getting fluids then he is fine. Fasting helps cleanse the body. that is why when you are sick (in this case your son) you lose your appetite. The energy required to digest food is now focused on healing the body.

I think this is fine with your two year old. But consult his pediatrician.

have you tried making smoothies or milkshakes? that's what my dr suggested for my son when he did the same thing. your sons belly has probably shrunk and he's probably scared that if he eats he'll throw up also.

Let him have some goldfish crackers and jell-o. His tummy will get back to normal soon. But with little or no food, it will shrink, so liquids can fill him up quickly right now. Go slow... just offer him food often in small amounts...

I would avoid mac-n-cheese and anything fatty. When my child went through this, one doctor told me to let him eat anything he wanted, so he ate mac-n-cheese and chicken nuggets and a ham and cheese lunchable... couldn't keep anything down-- so I went back and another doctor told me to try leaner foods like noodles and soup

Gelatin, mashed potatoes (no butter), crackers, fruit, some veggie he likes. It's only a few days so you need not worry about his lack of appetite. He'll soon be his old self. Good luck.
