2 Miscarriage and Testing

I am so sorry you are going through this. There are many tests that can be done to help you find answers. I had 4 miscarriages before I was able to have a successful pregnancy (I now have a 2 yr old and an 9 month old). I would recommend going to see a Reproductive Endocrinologist. I saw Dr. Anil Pinto (www.drpinto.com) and he and his staff was fabulous! There are many blood tests that can be done to help diagnose the cause of miscarriages. Nothing may show up, but then again it might and you will only know if you get the tests. In my case, I had anti-thyroid antibodies that were impacting my bodies ability to maintain the pregnancies. I took blood thinner injections for my 2 successful pregnancies and all worked out.

I'm so sorry for what you are going through. I also had two miscarriages. After the second miscarriage I went in to talk with my OB about what was going on. My issue was my progestrone levels were very low. I would suggest starting there. It's a simple blood test. Good luck!

I am sorry about your miscarriages. I have had two too - one before and one after my daughter was born. After the second one, I went to a perinatal specialist at Presby Dallas at the suggestion of my OBGYN. He did some blood work (unfortunately I cannot remember what as it was four years ago), but the tests did not give a reason for the miscarriages. The doctor said miscarriages are very common and having two is not as unusual as one might think. He seemed surprised my OBGYN would suggest I go to him having "only had two miscarriages". He did understand why I would be concerned, but tried to explain that it's nothing to worry about unless I never had a baby or had many more than two miscarriages.

He said it is very common for women in their early 20s to have miscarriages, so it is not necessarily an age thing. I had no idea. Anyway, we haven't tried again due to my daughter's health issues and costs associated with them (can't afford another child right now), but I wanted to let you know not to stress too much about it. My cousin had three miscarriages and has two healthy boys. She had lots of tests that showed nothing either.

I am sorry for your loss. I know you are hurting. Please know there are a lot of women who have walked in your shoes. I had 5 miscarriages before delivering my daughter (who's now 11 in June). I had the BEST specialist in Dallas Presbyterian. His name is Dr. Ali Toofanian. I went to him after my 3rd miscarriage and his first consult with me was an hour visit in his office. Next he told me what he thought we were looking at and did some lab work and a brain scan. He was right on all counts. I had an adenoma on my pituitary gland along with my hormones were nuts. I still had a couple of miscarriages after that. Then when I was about 10 weeks with my daughter, I started massive bleeding and knew I was miscarrying again. Turns out I have a blood disorder that produces clots while pregnant. I had to go on heparin shots twice daily and take a baby aspirin. I was also put to bed for the duration of my pregnancy. I did deliver my sweet miracle baby and I don't know who was more proud, my husband and I or Dr. T.

My best advice is find a specialist, maybe someone who specializes in high risk pregnancies. They will recommend what lab work needs to be done and guide you from there. The best part is since they deal with high risk all the time, they are usually incredible people who really understand what you're going through.

If you google Dr. Toofanian, you will see a lot of testimonials to his skill as well as his bedside manners. He's a wonderful, wonderful doctor.

Also, just a sidebar, 4 years later I had a healthy boy. I still had to do the shots and baby aspirin but didn't have to do bedrest. My cup runneth over.

I've been pregnant nine times and have one healthy 11 year old daughter. One in five pregnancies don't go to term. All of my miscarriages happened before week 10 and I was about your age. I never had any reason as to the cause of them. If you flip a coin 9 times... you could come up with tails 8 times... and one glorious time you come up with heads. I think its sometimes the "luck of the draw". The important thing is to keep trying... and just be thankful for nature and its yearning to produce a healthy child.

That said... I'm very sorry you are going thru this... its not easy, but have faith that sometimes nature "knows best". Hugs and prayers are with you.

I am so sorry for your lose. I know it is hard to hear that this is a normal occurrence right now, but 2 miscarriages is not necessarily a sign for alarm. I think it is a great idea to get some blood work done and see if there is something going on with your hormone levels. I would also recommend that you start taking some good vitamins to help your body be as healthy as it can be. Remember that not all vitamins are created equal even the prescription prenatal ones.

Sorry to hear about your loss & as the comments are saying it is common that this happens (which I do not think they meant it in passing) it hurts none-the-less. I had 2 miscarriages and discovered that since I had RH negative blood (O Negative) & my husband has Positive blood type my blood was, in laymen terms, attacking the growth of the baby, thus miscarriage. I had to get a Rhogam (spelling?) shot in which they drew my blood & mixed it with that product & then gave it back to me as a shot. I did not have any problem after that. I have 3 Beautiful daughters now 24,23, & 17 yrs old! I hope this helps. May God bless you with your hearts desire!

You may want to consult with a fertility specialist. I knew a family, more common than you think, that had chromosome issues and after five miscariages, she went to a specialist and he was able to do IVF with only healthy, viable eggs that didn't hold that certain defect that lead consistently to miscarriage.
I bet your insurance would at least cover a consult and you would be able to move forward with some clarity from a specialist in the field. You would get your answers and be able to move forward.
