Ok so I need as many ideas as possible for this. My daughter has always had very hard bowel movements. Not to be gross but its pretty much like rabbit poop. In the past couple months there has been a few times where I had to help her get it out and she was SCREAMING!!! Poor baby. Now besides being sick she starts to scream out of no where. She hasnt gone yesterday or today. I tried sitting her on the big potty (which has helped a couple times) I have been giving her prune juice all day (she actually drank a bit of it) and I even just tried the thermonetor in her butt and still nothing. Any quick fixes anyone has found to work would be great....She is going to bed soon and I hate to have her sleep without going again....

Thank so much everyone!!! I am defintely going to try the juicy juice idea...and I willhave to ask about mirlax. I know when I went to her checkup the doctor said there is something that they can give her but its recommended for 2 and older so she is still a little young. She is back to not going again all day, something has to give soon....I didnt even think about all the problems it could cause with potty triaining until someone else wrote about it. YIKES....

And she is not on formula anymore...just regular whole milk....We are going to start cutting down on that too...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just posted this a little over a half hour ago and she actually just went. I think the prune juice finally kicked in. I have talked to her doctors about this the past 3 times she has been there. They said the same things. keep with the juices and stay away from certain foods too much. She actually drinks the prune juice which I am shocked. My older daughter wouldnt have anything to do with it. And I do give her lots and lots of apple juice and water. But like I said...She has ALWAYS had very hard bowel movements. And she isnt usually in pain until I check her diaper and I can actually see it...but its too big and I need to help it out. Thats when she starts to scream. Thats only happend a couple times...but a couple times to many for me. It was aweful...Doctors said there is a medicine but the dont recomend it till she is 2 or older. So anyone with more ideas for this I would still like to hear...I have this issue a lot...THANKS!!!

Does she still drink any type of formula? Using soy will make this happen more, and using Alimentum will give the runs, so if you need a more permanent solution so that this won't happen, you could try this.

We have had the same problems with my daughter and we took her off of cow milk and put her on Goat milk and she is doing so much better. We used the Miralax like the doctor suggested, and we still do sometimes, but now we don't need it very often.

Those are a couple of things you could try since she did go and the crisis is over. Poor you and poor her! I have been there and it was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. My thoughts are with you.

Don't do the thermometer in her backside. You could cause a rectal tear and she could end up bleeding, and then when the poop does come out it could make the tear worse.

You could try a children's glycerin suppository. Make sure it's NOT an adult sized one. Follow the directions exactly. It will help soften the poop safely from the fanny end and hopefully "uncork" her a bit. She night need for you to do it a couple of times.

It does sound to me, though, that she doesn't drink enough liquids. She needs to drink a lot of water, have less dairy, more fiber, less binding foods like bananas and peas and rice. Right now the focus should be on hydrating her. The more food you give her, the more risk she'll have of compacting the poop and getting a blockage.

You can also help soften the poop by having her play in a full tub of warm water. It will also help relax her bowels. It might even relax her enough that she poops in the tub, which is actually what you hope for because it will hurt her less. There will be less pressure on her and the pain coming out of her fanny will be less. The water will also help it glide out of her as a natural lubricant.

If she's crying from abdominal pain, please call the pediatrician even if it's after hours. She shouldn't be in pain in between bowel movements.

We tried prunes, pears, karo syrup and even a prescription syrup to help my son when he was a baby. The only thing that has had consistent success is Miralax. Thank goodness! He is four now and still gets frequent constipation but a week of Miralax can save the day.

If you decide to do that, talk to your pediatrician or pharmacist about the recommended dosage and frequency for that age. I know we had better luck with a small amount every day instead of waiting for him to really get stopped up and have to use a large amount at once.

Please speak with your doctor about Miralax. Both of our daughters had this same issue when we started cow's milk at 1 year, and they were SO constipated. You really REALLY don't want to go into potty training with a constipated kid. Our pediatrician recommended Miralax (which makes the poop softer, but is not a laxative) daily until our daughters were more regular and could go without straining. In extreme cases where the child hasn't gone in days and is in agony, then you may have to take more extreme measures, such as 2 tablespoons of Mineral oil. (And strap the diaper on tight, because when mineral oil works, it REALLY works... yikes!)

Sorry your little one is having trouble. :(

Oh girl, I really do feel (well, not feel), but understand your pain!! My baby girl, whp is now 9, had the SAME issues ever since we got custody of her at 2 yrs old. I'm sure it was going on before that too. (I just didn't have her, so I wasn't there) OMG, it is so sad! I tried EVERYTHING, and it seemed like nothing would help. It got to the point where my child was afraid to have a BM, and really, who could blame her?? The problem is, when she held it, it was even worse and more painful when she finally did go! I eventually found that the best course is to make sure that she drinks limited milk (or in your case formula if she is still on tha), and more water and juices. I ALWAYS give her either orange juice (it used to be 1/2 and 1/2 watered down when she was younger so it wasn't too harsh on her tummy when she was younger) in the morning with her breakfast, and then throughout the day she drank several cups of apple juice. She loves to drink water. I don't put anything in it for flavoring. I think that I once added some corn syrup that someone suggested to help with the constipation, but she didn't like it. (she isn't a "sweet" type of kid, and prefers if things are naturally sweet, like juice. If I am really worried because she hasn't had a BM all day and into the next day, (which is the longest I allow it to go now) I give her some Juicy Juice, it's a particular one. They make a citrus blend, and let me tell you, it is like a laxative for her! I keep some on hand just for this reason. I don't give it to her at ANY other time, because it really, REALLY does make her have very loose stools, but in cases where I know that she hasn't gone, well, it saves her some pain and anguish everytime. That is the only thing that has worked for her. I have used the kids suppositories, and even the prescription meds, and they all worked for a day or 2, and then stopped. If she drinks her OJ and the water and apple juice like we want her to, she does ok most of the time. It really is about having enough fluids in their systems. That seems strange since we are talking about BM, but it is the answer. I really do hope that you can find an answer for your little one! This is something that I wouldn't wish on ANYONE!! Oh, and one other thing. I know it sounds very nasty, but when you have to "help" her out when she is having a BM, dont be afraid to use a little something to lube her up there. It wont hurt her as much if she has some vasaline or some lubricant near the opening. (Not way in it, but near the end) Also, I would not reccomend the thermomiter again either. If you need to use anything go with the suppository. It's made for this purpose, is shorter and way more blunt ended. That way you don't need to be concerned about any damage internally. Wll, I wish you all the best. This Mama stuff is so difficult sometimes!! Heart breaking.................. </3 good luck

You didn't mention, but have you talked to her pediatrician? It's awful when they hurt and are screaming!
My little one has been seriously constipated since birth. He would go three days without pooping before we really got too worried (per the doctor). For about four months starting when he was about 5 months old, he was on 4 ounces of apple juice a day to help with the problem. An on call nurse had us do the thermometer trick one time, which helped, but we were told by his pediatrician that that should really only be done as an absolute last resort and very rarely due to the fact that it can affect the muscles in his rectum.
Have you tried juices other than prune juice? My dude wouldn't touch it but apple juice really helped.
Sorry if you've already tried this! I'm just trying to think of things we did to help!

We had pear juice recommened to us by my kids' doctor. It works great. We now use it for the whole family on those occasions that we need it. I would keep those Gerber bottles of it in the house and give half a jar with half water. Sometimes it took a couple days but it always worked. Pear juice tastes a lot better than prune.
