My feeling is that 14 yrs is a little old for a party. I would suggest inviting one or two good friends and do something special, i.e. laser tag, sporting event, arcade, go-cart riding, etc. We've been doing this with my 12 yr old for the past 3 years now. His b-day gets acknowledged and he has fun with his friends.

What does he want to do? Considering that you need to put this together over the weekend...
- dinner at his favorite restaurant with 3 or 4 friends
- dinner/movie with a couple of buddies "alone"- meaning you and your hubs are a few tables over and a few rows back
- "gaming tournament" with his buddies- pick a game, pair them up and design a "bracket". Depending on how far you want to go, you could borrow or rent another t.v. and gaming system and have your living room set up like a tournament. Have plenty of snacks and pizzas and prizes for the winners

Most HS aged boys don't want their moms planning a birthday party for them- does he?

My boy turned 14 over the summer, and for the past several years his birthday celebrations have been relatively low key. He invites a handful of boys over, I order pizza and bake a cake. They eat, play on the PS3 and play Nerf wars then we all go to a matinee. Once back at the house the cycle starts all over again. LOL

I usually have the boys come over between noon and 1 and bring the ones not staying over for the night home by 7pm.

Check with your son - at this age they have definitely have an idea of what they want to do for their birthdays.

Don't forget to schedule a special birthday boy hug for him. I also like to surprise mine with Breakfast in bed for his special day.

I'd ask him what he might like. At this age, a few friends and something fun like go-carting, movie, laser tag etc would be fun and easy to plan. Remember it's his "golden" birthday (same day as age) if you are into that stuff! Enjoy

I'm not sure if you're near Sugar Land, but at the ice skating rink there, they have these really cool bumper cars you can use on the ice & also allow broomball. It's near the First Colony area, so your food options are plentiful as well!

Also, maybe paintball?

Hi J.
Well that's a tough question without knowing anything about your son. Have you asked him what he would like to do for his birthday? That's where I'd start.
I know for my son, taking a trip to the best & biggest guitar store would be all the he'd need. He'd spend hours in there playing different guitars and dreaming about the one he wants someday. My nephew loves hockey, so the best birthday gift for him was renting a rink and playing hockey with his buddies. My friends son loves horsebackriding. Some boys just like to have their friends over to play video games. It really is going to be all about your son and what his interests are.
