13 Month Old Not Wanting to Walk for the Last Week

My 13 month old started walking on her own about 3 weeks ago but for the last week, she has not wanted to walk at all. She'll walk behind a push toy or if she is holding my or my husband's hand but no longer goes on her own. She seems content crawling and will drop to her bottom if we try to stand her up alone to walk. As far as we know, nothing happened to scare her........she's had the normal tumbles and falls that are expected when they first learn to walk but nothing that we would see as being traumatic. This didn't happen with our first child and don't know if we should be worried. Curious if anyone else has had this experience and if so, what have you done?

What can I do next?

Keep in mind that learning to walk is a step-by-step process (no pun intended- lol). She knows she can get around faster by crawling at this point. I wouldn't worry about it. The better she gets at walking, the more she'll do it. Pretty soon crawling will be thing of the past =)

Nothing to worry about!!
My son is now 2 1/2 years old but started off just as your little one at the exact same age. Basically, your daughter is too smart! She has figured out that by crawling she can move faster than she can by walking. By now I'm sure she is an experienced crawler and it can get her from point a to point b much faster tahn her wobbly baby steps can. I just tried to put my son in situtations where there were little friends that were walking around so that he could see them and take an interest in it. Just be patient, it sounds like she's just being a little too logical about the whole idea. :)

Is she eating anything differently, or alot of something? Could be allergies~outdoor or food. Was she recently vaccinated?

Just some things to check into. It's probably nothing to be concerned about, though. Kids do funny things sometimes ;)

Good luck!

Hi A.,

My 14 month old daughter did the same thing. Right around her year birthday she started walking and walked for a few days by herself, but then wanted nothing to do with it. She started crawling everywhere, or walking if holding a hand, but if we let go, she would drop to her butt and start crawling. After a month or so of this, she started walking again...and not a little bit, it's all she wants to do now and walks for really long distances. It was like she was taking it all in and learning how to better walk during that time.
Hope that helps.

She knows she can get around faster by crawling instead of toddling while learning to walk. It isn't that unusual for busy kids to go through this. My granddaughter went back and forth between crawling and walking until she had walking down good enough to run around after the dog.

This is pretty common... My first child did this. We just waited, and eventually he found interest in walking again and started back up. Wait a month or so--if things don't improve by then, or if you are really concerned, talk to your doctor.

I have a 14 mo. little girl. She for the last 2 months would some days walk but most would crawl or walk on her knees. She to would always walk behind a push toy. It was very frustrating because I knew she could walk. I did not push it though and now in the last couple days she is walking almost 100% of the time. Just be patient. She is my fourth. She will be walking when she is ready.

Hi A.,
Boy does this sound familiar. My 18 month old started taking his first steps at 15 months. He seemed to really enjoy it and walked all over that first day. He then gave up on it completely and would only occasionally walk behind push toys and holding onto our hands. Over time, he wanted to walk all the time, but ONLY while holding onto our hands! I actually posted on here at that point because I was so frustrated with my seemingly stubborn child! Then, around 17 months, he just decided to "go for it," and he started walking everywhere. While he still LOVES to hold my hand and will often drop to the floor in protest when I let go, he rarely uses crawling as a form of transportation. You have nothing to worry about, except maybe a lack of patience with the process - that was me!! She'll be there soon. Some kids, like my little boy, are more cautious and like to have the whole thing mastered before trying again!! Good luck!

My 14 month old won't walk on her own either. Her doctor said not to worry as long as she has reached or surpassed her other milestones (which she has). The doctor also said that some kids just won't walk on their own until they know they won't fall. It is easier to crawl so no walking until it is perfect walking.

this may seem like a stupid question, and you may have already done this, but have you checked to see if there is a sliver or something in her foot, or somewhere on the floor something pokey?

im sure your daughter is fine, shes just probably taking a break. dont worry about it too much i guess, and talk to your doctor
