1 Yr Old Son Throwing up in Bed??

My daughter had severe reflux and I agree with the other post that this doesn't quite sound like reflux. Usually that starts at a younger age and they start to outgrow it when they're on solid foods. My recommedation would be to write down everytime he throws up - what time it is, what did he eat last, how long it has been since last food or bottle, was he upright or lying down after a bottle, any other symptoms like diarrhea or fussiness before throwing up... See if any kind of pattern develops. I hope you can pinpoint the problem soon so he can start feeling better - not to mention, no one likes cleaning up puke!

I would think the first clue would be that you just changed from breast feeding to bottle feeding...maybe he is getting too much air when he uses the bottle....or maybe the formula doesnt quite agree with his little tummy. I agree with one of the other Moms...keep a log of what he eats/drinks...and when he gets sick and see if you can see a cause and effect y pattern. Ask your doctor if there is a different formula that you could try that might be easier on his little tummy.Good luck and hang in there!!

Yikes, flashbacks. My son was doing this, too, this spring. Otherwise, very healthy, then started puking in bed. I don't know how many times we washed his bedding. I gave it a week to run its course.

We took him to an ER that laughed it off as a stomach bug and just push pedialyte. I asked our doctor about it, and he said some kids just puke and it is their "normal". Yeah, sure.

Third week of puking, he had lost weight and was looking pale. I took him to a different ER and they took a simple chest Xray and turned out he had Pneumonia!!!!

I didn't realize that pneumonia could have only one symptom like puking, but apparently it can. He didn't seem sick otherwise. No fevers or coughing. I'm thinking that the laying down made the fluid in his lungs move and irritate the trigger that makes most of us cough, but his little body chose to puke instead. It also must not have been the full blown pneumonia, but like a walking pneumonia because he seemed ok for most of the day.

Don't mean to scare you. Just something to rule out.

Our son threw up in his bed a few times while he was teething (his 2-year molars were brutal). No fever and he said he felt good. When I called our pediatrician's nurse, she asked if he was teething, and said it's common for kids to throw up the undigestable saliva/mucous when they lie down at night. It it persists, see your pediatrician, but if he's teething, it could be from that.

Since what you told that doctor has now changed, call the doctor back and tell them, then see what they say.

He may have a milk allergy. I would consult your Dr right away, yes it is dangerous he could choke.

Could be acid reflux. To help this don't lay him down until 30 min to an hour after he has eaten. Also laying on an incline with his head up can help this. (They make wedges that go under and crib mattress for this.) I used to nanny for a boy who had this BADLY and then my own daughter had it and I had it during pregnancy. It is not fun! Just an idea.

I dont know what it would be but he is big enough that if he throws up in bed he wont let himself choke on it. If he has to throw up he will wake up and then do it. Its unfortunate that he doesnt cry to wake you up so you can get him all clean but rest assured, he will not choke on it. I would be concerned too if my kiddo was only a few months old, but he is mobile enough to turn his head or sit up while he throws up. Good luck! Call the doctor if you have any other concerns, after all, thats what theyre there for!!

My almost 10 mo old is doing the same thing. 3 nights in a row now. Dr says its probably just mucus that can't drain when she's not upright. They suggested that we try waking her up in the middle of the night and giving her saline in her nose and sucking it out. They also said we should try letting her sleep upright so she's asleep in her carseat right now. I hope they both shake whatever is causing this as soon as possible because it is very stressful to wake up and find your kiddo with vomit all over her. It is scary to think of what could happen but like the one mom said, they should be ok at this point. I just hope that's true.

I am not a health care provider and this could be a number of things, but one thing to consider is that he is lactose intolerant. Try a soy based formula, no cow's milks and see if that helps. My daughter started throwing up (it seemed randomly to me at the time) when I was weaning her and the change in formula did the trick.

She did not stay lactose intolerant, at 22 she's a cow milk drinking machine! She may become intolerant again as most of the women in my family are, but she may take after her dad here and stay tolerant.

I haven't looked at the other responses yet, but I can tell you that my daughter (17 months) did something similar recently and the doctor thought it was a stomach virus. It stopped so that was probably right. When she was an infant she went through it then as well (mostly in the evening) and they thought at that time it was acid reflux. They treated it that way and she grew out of it. I've also heard that babies can develop a milk intolerance as they get a bit older. Keep a journal and if you think it is lasting longer than virus or stomach flu maybe question those things.

I have a severe refluxer and don't think it's that. It would've been happening while he was smaller. I'd look more into an intolerance than anything else...

Hello there! Poor little guy! It sounds to me like it could possible be reflux! Both of my boys had issue with it at different times in their lives. My 1yr old had it as an infant even though he was breast fed. My 11yr old had it when he went into kindergarten. He would just throw up out of the blue. His dotor treated him for about 6 mos. with Prilosec (before it was OTC)and then he was fine. It seemed though that milk was one of the worst irritants for some reason. Hope this was helpful.

Good Morning D., I think I would call my Ped again and let them know the vomiting continues and the times he does this.
It almost does sound like when he lays down and drinks something it's allowing the liquid to continue on it's course to his tummy. Does he take a bottle to bed with him? Or does he have it finished before bedtime? Might try giving him his bottle before bed and letting him move around a little while before putting him down. Other then that I am at a loss as to what it could be also.

So Call his Dr. again and get to the bottom of it. He sounds like a perfectly healthy little man in all other area's.
