1 Year Old Toy Suggestions
My daughter will turn 1 just after Christmas. So I need toy ideas. I've looked around but nothing jumps out as being all that great. My five year old is easy. LEGO's, monster trucks, cars, etc. When he was one is was easy then too. Semi trucks, digging trucks, dump trucks, etc. His gifts are kinda the same jus older kid versions. But with my daughter I'm stumped. I've bought her a Groovy girl doll and some clothes, but what else is their for a girl at this age?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, J. Smith

Hi J.,
My daughter just turned 1 last month. At this point, you don't need to worry about 'girly' toys. You need to get developmental/educational toys. I got my daughter this musical table by Leap Frog (can't remember exactly what it's called). It's a small table that has instruments, things that spin, and a plastic book in the middle. If you turn the page of the book, everything plays music. If you turn the page the other way, its ABC's, 123's, shapes and colors. She absolutley LOVES it! You can get it for $40 at Wal-Mart.
Another toy that's great is this talking phone with wheels. It obviously teaches numbers but it also has music on it and pictures of animals that says the name of the animal and the sound it makes.
Just go to Wal-Mart and look in the toy dept. You'll find all kinds of stuff! Toys that stack are good to teach coordination. At this point, your daughter's brain is working constantly and she needs to be stimulated!
Good luck to you!

Our friends had a little girl turning one and I gave her a shopping cart. She couldn't quite walk on her own yet so the cart helped and it's a toy she will be able play with for a long time. There's also play food that can go in the cart. I got them from toys r us. I hope this helps!

How about one of those toys that have you can push (for help in walking) and then ride? Or she's already steady on her feet - how bout just one she can ride?
Fisher price makes great age-based toys and they put the labels on the box. I don't worry about whether they're "boy" or "girl" toys because I'm too busy just trying to figure out whether the activity is something my niece or nephew will like?

My daughter just turned one. For her birthday she got the laugh and learn kitchen, laugh & learn piggy bank, puppy, cookie puzzle and many other toys. She loves the laugh and learn stuff. I was thinking what else does she need, christmas is right around the corner and she has everything. So, i have been looking. Playschool makes "little people" they are pretty cool they are kind of like weebles but not and they have towns, castles, farms and all kind of little places for them. They are for 9 months and up. I also found a really cool rocking horse (but it is a caterpillar). It has little busy toys all over it, I saw it at Walmart for $40. They have little tea sets and cooking sets for little girls, too. Good luck! I hope I could help

J.,
My daughter isn't there yet ... she's just 7 and a half months old. But, I have a two and a half year old son, and some of his toys have been unisex that we've bought him ... and they've gone over GREAT with kids of all ages at our playgroups.
One of our favorites is the Leap Frog musical table. Not sure of the exact name ... but it's a learning table with music and lights. It has colors, shapes, a book, and several different "instruments" on it. We got that for our son around that age, but kids in playgroup (and my son) still play with it (ages 1-3). They LOVE it!
Also, we got him the Fisher Price dinosaur with balls. You put the balls in it and it makes noises and comes down different ramps. We got it for him for his first birthday, and again, all the kids STILL play with it during playgroup (even 3 year olds!) ... it's been one of the FAVORITES for all the kids playing over here (and it's just $25 I think).
He loved anything musical (would also be great for a girl), and anything with balls, blocks, etc. And, all those type toys really grow with them, too ... which is always nice! We've really enjoyed the Leap Frog line of toys ... they've really helped my son learn his numbers and letters.
Good luck and happy birthday to your sweetie!

Hi,
I found that anything that lights up and or sings does the trick. This tends to be stage where all of the toys need off buttons,(to keep your sanity).

Have you tried looking on babycenter.com? They have lots of educational/developmental toys by age. They also list which ones are award winning toys as well. I've found this to be very helpful in choosing toys for our daughter, 10 months.
Good luck!
