1 Year Old Party - Other Kids' Activities

Hi everyone! My son's first birthday is next weekend, and there are going to be about 8 other kids there, ranging in age from 6 months to 4 years. I'd like to have some fun stuff for them to do to keep them entertained, so I wondered what tips you have? I thought of having a pinata. Should I have some arts and crafts or something? I don't want to spend a lot of money (because we don't have any!) but I don't want the kids to be bored and then the parents have to leave or can't have fun. My parents are helping with the party and it's going to be in their backyard, which is very big and has lots of space to play. Let me know if you have any experience or ideas! Thanks!

What can I do next?

How about a couple of baby pools? If you have friends who have them, you can borrow them. Just ask the parents to send a bathing suit or a change of clothes. If they can be in the shade at a table, play-doh is good. Kids love to run around too - just make sure they keep hydrated and that they have sunscreen.

Have a great time!

I was also going to suggest a water play theme - play pools, water squirters, sprinklers, water balloons, slip n' slide, etc.

Familyfun.com is a great site to find all kinds of party ideas. You can search by party theme. You can also search the site for outdoor games or outdoor crafts, too. Sidewalk chalk is always a hit. Water activities are fun like the kiddie pools or sprinklers.

There are so many options. You could have 3 or 4 stations/ play areas. I used to use these large plastic storage tubs, one for water and one with bird seed. I put all my measuring cups and small plastic cups and bowls so they could just play with them (2 stations there). Collect some pine cones and tie a piece of yard to them then let the kids spread some cake icing on them then roll in another area with more of the bird seed (station 3). They each have a bird feeder to take home and hang from a tree. Chalk is always fun. we found a kids tent and tunnel set from Costco is was like $40 dollars and we gave it to our son for his birthday present then used it at his party. The kids entertained themselves so the parents could relax just a bit. Here is a link to the Costco tent set we got. http://www.costco.com search for the Hide Me

Hi K.,
What about doing the party next to a public park. That way the kids can go to the swings etc. Have an adult there to supervise....
Where I live, there are many children's parties in public parks.

A backyard, a sprinker to run through, maybe a kid pool with some simple water toys, some balls to kick around, and several kids to play with...What else could possibly be needed?? Do not feel you need to "entertain" them, just let them be kids.
