Your Baby Can Read - Cranberry Township,PA

here's what i did when i had the same question. i bought the dvd's off amazon for 60$. someone on here told me not to pay full price so i didn't... i think i got a good deal. this way, you can see what the program is all about with out spending the big bucks on the whole program, then if it's interesting to your child buy the additional flash cards and other books they have off amazon (i started a wish list :-). my two year old can read hi and clap and i bought the program about 1 year ago but i'm the same as the last poster, working mom who wasn't disaplined enough to make him watch it every day. i think that it is a neat program tho, especially with my older son having dyslexia and everything we had to go through to get him where he is now, this might just give my little guy the jump start my older son should have had. if you;re not a drill sgt. with it, then i don't see it being a bad thing or turning children off to reading - but then again i'm no expert. i will say it has helped big time with my son's vocabulary! it's good for them to see words at a young age - that's why we're told to read to our babies, right?? well, my advice in a nutshell... if you do decide to get it, try to do it at a cheaper price, because it is a tough routine to stick to and the video's get a thumbs up from me!!

I have not tried the program, but I know it is expensive. Look in the education archives for a similar question posted not long ago for more opinions...
I was just reading an article about teaching babies to read in Parents magazine which warned that teaching kids to read TOO early can actually have the effect of turning kids OFF to reading. I thought that was an interesting finding.
You are right, all kids learn differently. My son excels verbally and was an early reader just because of everyday activities/toys/games. He is in first grade this year and is an awesome reader. So based on MY experience of NOT using it with my son, I would say its not necessary. Good luck!

I bought it and I have to say, I didn't have the discipline to make my daughter sit and watch the DVD every day. I believe it could work if you follow their instructions. I do love the books and flash cards that came with the program. I also bought this extra pack of books they sold, it was a great deal $30 and I think 10 books. I also bought the Spanish and Germany language programs which I do not think were worth it. I work full time so if you're a stay at home mom looking for something to do with the kids this winter, it may work for you.

Another Mom asked about this program in the past and I'll tell you what I told her - SAVE YOUR MONEY!!! I bought into the hype and bought the program and it really is a WASTE OF MONEY - you can do exactly what they do on tv without all their propeganda. The program is pretty much based on repitition and memorization. If you watch the commercials closely (which I did AFTER buying the program and feeling like a fool) you can see that the kids don't even really look at the cards AT ALL. They have just memorized the colors, pictures etc that are on each card and are just automatically saying the word. To be honest - that's all reading is . . . it's repition, memorization and finally realization that hey - everytime this letter comes up it sounds like . . . I "used" the program with my now 3 1/2 year old but NOT with my 21 month old and to be honest - I think my 21 month old is doing better and is more advanced for her age then my 3 1/2 year old. Each child is different and some learn quicker then others, some enjoy learning and some don't but my advice to you is to just read with your children, sing the alphabet song and do stuff in repitition and make it fun. Make your own flashcards at home if you want but do NOT spend the money on the program.

We did the trial period for Your Baby Can Read and though I'm sure it would've been very helpful, the cost was ridiculous for flash cards, books,and dvds. It was $200 for stuff you could just buy at the book store. Our daughter is 19 months and not formulating too many words so she will be evaluated by early intervention specialists. She excels in everything else but speech. Good luck!
