Wont Drink Milk from Cup

I need to wean my quadruplets from the bottle and I have one that refuses to drink milk from a cup, She will only drink it from her bottle. I've tried different cups, straws and even flavored the milk. She won't drink it. I'm concerned she won't get her daily allowance of milk intake when I wean her, she gets 1 cup of milk from her bottle a day now and the rest is from dairy products. Her siblings get 2 cups plus dairy. Any suggestions? HELP!!!

My grandaughter did the same thing. So I started nuking it just to take off the chill. Remember they are going from room temp to ice cold. I would give her the cup of room temp milk eventually she drank it. Now she drinks it cold and loves it.

Wow, quadruplets! Congrats to you and best wishes!

I'm reminded of other parts of growing up like potty training. There are just some who take longer to get the concept. I'm not in your position so my suggestion is to listen to your intuition.

Maybe this one baby finds more comfort from that bottle and will take some time to find something else as comforting or comfortable. Can you find a bottle-looking cup?

My youngest had quite a hard time learning how to suck up liquid through a straw. But if you try it and it helps, then good. lol

i belive our son did better with water when we introduced the sippy. we also used the softer tips first. but mostly it sounds like she just isnt ready. assuming your kids are one yr. now, you might try again in a few days or even a week. just keep offering it to her though. good luck. congrats on your quads and God bless your family.

I had a hard time weaning my almost 2 year old from the bottle but then I discovered Nuby cups. You can buy the ones with two handles and the drinking spout is soft like a bottle. She took to it right away.

Contrary to popular belief, kids do not need to drink milk to get their daily protein and calcium requirements. As long as she is eating those other dairy sources, she will be fine. Cheese, yogurt, pudding are often better sources of the minerals in milk anyway and are often easier to digest. I wouldn't worry about it and let her be her.

Decide which is more important to you and go with it. If the dairy consumption is the goal, let her keep the bottle for awhile. If winning is the goal, don't give her the bottle. My kids all had bottles for "way too long" according to the pedi, but they've grown up to be educated, employed, and delightful adults with great teeth! Hope this helps...good luck!

Oh my goodness. I'm in the same boat. I'm weaning my daughter off an oatmeal/formula mix I gave her for severe reflux. She won't even drink milk. I switched to Vanilla Soy milk and she will now drink maybe 4-5 oz out of a bottle. We are working with a speech therapist on the issue. She dislikes sippie cups and wants us to try to teach her to drink with a straw. Starting out we take a juice box that squeezes and squeeze a little in her mouth and then she will learn to motions that way. she recommended getting the mustard and ketchup bottles like for a picnic to use to squeeze milk through a straw. Her intake with a bottle has increased so I'm ready to try the next step. The Nuby cups make for an extremely smooth transition with my son. No such luck for my red head. Good luck to you.

Make this the only things she drinks. I had the same problem and then my daughter realized this was the only thing she was going to get to drink. After she started drinking the milk, then I added in water and now a little apple or grape juice. May you have a lot of grace with those quads.

Hi L.,
I am glad you asked. I am a parent educator and an occupational therapist and I had a premie baby. One thought that I have is that she may not be developmentally ready/she lacks the coordination necessary to handle a cup or a straw. You could have her evaluated by a pediatric occupational or speech therapist that specializes in oral-motor skills. If you are in Austin I would highly suggest Alyson at Little Tesoros as a resource. She is an OT.

If you get it checked out and you find it is not developmental/or a lack of motor skills necessary to swallow from a cup, and is possibly behavioral, feel free to contact me directly and I can send you some resources.
Good luck!
Blessings to you and your family.
K.

I have to second what Jennifer T said. Milk isn't that important, just the benefits from dairy. Milk can be very filling, not leaving room for other nutritious foods. None of my kids really care for milk that much. They MAYBE get 6 oz a day. We supplement with yogurt and cheese. The pedi is fine with that and they seem healthy. My oldest boy had a rough time learning to use a sippy cup (and he was already off the bottle) til one day it just clicked. Good luck!
