Where to Go to Get Rid of Old Stuff?

I am new to the area and New York. Recently I tood a van load of stuff to Good Will to donate and to my surprise they wouldn't take it! I was actually left speechless at the rudeness of the lady who told me that they wouldn't take my stuff. By stuff I mean, good usable coats, blankets, toys, some dishes, a phone set, etc. The reason was they either could not take them by state law ( this was the toys) or they had too many of them already. So ok.. where I take this stuff? A plumbing contractor we had here suggested Salvation Army, but I am afraid of running into the same thing. Is there actually a law that says you can't donate toys in New York? Does anyone have any ideas?

What can I do next?

if you still need to get rid of the stuff, u can probably try to post it on www.craigslist.com and offer it for free or even for a small price, i've sold a lot of used furniture and electronics, stroller, people sell everything there and its free and easy to post as many times as you want. someone will actually come to your house and pick it up. just an idea for the future.

wow, I cannot believe that! that is horrible! why not trying to call a few churches? I am sure they would find people in need that would love to take them off your hands, and will be appreciative!

Hi M.,
The best thing for you to do is bring your stuff to a consignment shop. They may not take all of it but whatever they do take you could make a few bucks on.The clothes and blankets you can put into one of those salvation army boxes you see in grocery store parking lots. The other option is a yard sale. Good Luck

Let me guess....you went to the Good Will in Wappingers? I had the same problem there once a while ago. It's fine if they can't take something but there's absolutely no reason they have to be rude about it! I brought furniture there once and the woman looked at me as if I were on drugs...She actually asked me "why would you think we would accept furniture?" (And it was in excellent shape!!)

I don't have too many suggestions other than maybe now that the weather is starting to get warmer have a yard sale! I'll be one of your customers!! Or take the blankets and clothes to one of those clothing drop boxes...their everywhere. There's a whole bunch at Stop-N-Shop in Pok, off Rte 44. Also you might be able to donate some of the stuff, depending on the age range of it to a pregnancy crisis center in the City of Pok. It's on Church St, and it's called CareNet. Let me know and I'll look for their number....I donated some stuff to them and boy were they appreciative!! Don't let the Good Will get you down...they just need to hire new staff....

One more thing....someone just told me about a website called Craigslist.com. Apparently you can advertise to sell all kinds of things at no cost. I haven't actually looked into but it might be worth a browse.

I know there is a salvation army in Beacon. Whether you will get tax deduction like at good will or not I'm not sure. I'm also not sure about the toys but I think they take them. GoodWill poeple are supposed to be nice and helpful and I have come across the same thing that hey are rude and don't want our JUNK!!! Well our JUNK can go to a child who needs new clothes and a new coat. You can look in the phone book for the number for the Beacon location or I think there is one in Poughkeepsie also which is closer to you.
