Where Can I Donate Clothing for Senior Citizens in Naperville/DuPage Area?

Hi Ladies,

I know this isn't a baby topic, but I need to help my elderly father out. My mom passed away almost 2 years ago, & I am helping my father sort through all of her clothing and other items. This is a difficult process for my father, & he is often talking about giving away, selling, donating, etc. her things. My mother was in her 70's and the clothing ranges from size L-2x, 14-22. There's everything from winter coats to dresses, to casual wear to nightgowns. Some of the clothing is brand new. Most of it is from places like Kohl's, Target, Dress Barn, Carson's etc. It's definitely the style of clothing an older woman would wear.

I know it would mean a lot -and be easier for my dad to let go of these items-if he knew they were needed by someone & would be put to good use. I believe he is very hesitant to just put them in a box for Goodwill. I think he'd prefer that someone in need receive them for free rather than purchase them from a thrift store. If anyone has any ideas of an organization, perhaps one that specifically helps seniors, please let me know. Someplace in DuPage County or even Will County near Bolingbrook would be great. I live in west suburban Cook Co., so that area would work as well. Thanks so much!

Thank you everyone for your responses so far! I am so glad to have some new ideas. I will get to work on calling some of the organizations you mentioned in your messages this coming wee. I think, if I can not find an organization that will give the clothing directly to one or more of their clients in need, I will talk to my dad about Freecycle. Although I have talked to him about how charities use the money from their re-sale shops (and often let people in need pick out things they need, free of charge) I know that he feels really good when he sees (directly) that someone in need can use & will really appreciate the items.

There is a shelter in Aurora where the items would go directly to persons in need.

try a nearby church they will uaually take clothes and things and distibute them where they think they are needed.

I would imagine if you ask a local church, they would probably have someone that could use them, or know a good Senior Agency. There is also a Senior Daycare facility in Downers Grove. They may also be able to put them to good use or have a client that could use some clothing. The website is: http://www.communityadultdaycare.com/ if you're interested. It's very nice you are helping your father with this difficult process.

I suggest giving it away on Freecycle. (www.freecycle.org) The site is designed for people who want to give away items for free, and in turn find unwanted items from others for free. I have given away various unwanted household items and also received from others various clothes, toys, etc. for my young son. People will contact you through the site if they are interested in your items, and you can always ask them over email to tell you who exactly they want the items for so you can ensure they're going to good use. There are thousands of members, so I imagine you'll find someone who can use them.

the humanitarian service project has had a program for years that assists the elderly, check them out. they also do great work with children.
