...start drinking from a regular cup?
My son CAN, but it's easier for me to give him a sippy cup. He's 22 months old.
When my girls were little, I remember giving them regular cups when they were YOUNG, like the baby was probably only a year old, and the other was was a little over 2. It was easier for a lot of reasons, like my son doesn't speak but the girls could tell me if they needed more or spilled their drink, the girls could clean up their own mess, and they had their own little table and chairs, so they kept their drinks on the table at all times.
With my son, we don't have a little table, as mentioned, he doesn't speak yet (we're working on it), BUT I'm down to 3 sippy cups and really have no interest in buying more. My MIL gave me the sippy's without the stoppers, which still has the potential to create a mess.
I like the kids to be able to have access to their drinks through out the entire day, so they can drink when they're thirsty. Kind of hard to keep track of a regular cup ;)
So how old were YOUR kids when they drank from a regular cup??

I can't remember exactly, but I alternate travel cups and regular cups still and my son is 4.5 years old. I'd just rather he have a non-spill option if he wants to drink in the living room, but in the kitchen at mealtimes he drinks from a regular cup and has for a while. I think what you're doing is fine with having a sippy for "all day" drinking. The leak proof straw cups are good for their oral development (sucking is a good thing).
My youngest is 21 months and can drink from a straw and regular cup. However, I don't want to keep track of it when he wants a drink so I stick with a sippy cup to avoid as many spills as possible.
I still give spill-proof cups, not just sippies, but ones that are leak-proof with straws, because base housing decided that what FAMILY housing needed was champagne colored carpet, and they love to make you replace it for the slightest infraction because then the expense is on you and not them. As long as there is champagne colored carpet in a grape juice world, our cups will be spill-proof.

I know they were about 9 months when they started drinking from a straw. As to a REAL cup? man...oh...man...maybe 18months? Maybe sooner...when they started TRYING to eat finger foods, they both wanted to drink out of MY cup (yuck - the back wash was eeewwww)....
I still have them drinking out of sippy cups (yes, at 9 and 11) or no-leak water bottles because they have this habit of spilling things!!! URGH!!! So to avoid the hassles of cleaning up the mess? we use sippy's or water bottles!!
We did not start giving him a regular cup until 27 mo. Guess we just forgot! But now during the day he gets a regular cup and does really well with it. Guess that was the good part in waiting, not really any spills. And still a sippy cup at night in bed (likes to have water accessible) and with milk in the morning (he's in our bed hanging out). So there are times when he likes laying around to drink.
Shoot, my son is 9 and he still has his favorite sippy cup! LOL!!!
My son was able to drink from a cup right after he turned a year BUT I didn't leave him alone with it because he would drink then dump it out. I wasn't until he was about 2 that I would leave him alone with a glass. I have friends whose kids are 3-4 and they still use sippy cups. I wouldn't worry about it. I don't think you need to buy any sippy cups. Juice or water can hang out all day in one cup. I know it wasn't your question, but is your son receiving speech therapy?
all by age 2....& that was still with a few spills. We had hardwood floors so it didn't matter. With my daycare, the 2yos use sippy cups at mealtime & regular cups for occasional drinks. I prefer the sippy cups with meals, because they get distracted/greasy hands/etc. I also have some of those sipNgo cups....& the boys love the straws.
I took my son off the sippy cup before he was 2, but in reality it was more because I wanted his big sis, who was 3, off of them.
We did have a LOT of spills, but I learned to just give him water unless it was meal time or I was able to actually sit with him while he drank it. Like you said, I wanted him to have access to it throughout the day and water is much healthier anyway, so...
Designate a spot his cup is supposed to stay in and keep putting it back there. I am kinda mean sometimes when I have repeated myself for the 47th time so, I did tell him a few times nothing to drink until you bring me your cup. He learned to keep track of it after a couple of weeks.

My son is 2 1/2, and he still drinks out of a straw. He doesn't like drinking out of a regular cup. I know he can, but I feel he wouldn't get enough water. I'm cool with him drinking out of a straw, as long as he wants to,
My son is 21 months, he can drink out a cup, somewhat. He has developmental delay & is quite messy about it . So, he still gets a sippy, for now.
My son is 3.5, and I still give him sippy's. It's more about his propensity to spill, rather than ability. He CAN drink from a regular cup. Could around 18mos. I just don't give him anything in a regular cup in an attempt to keep the mess at bay.
Around age 2, I think. He could before, but in his haste most of it ended up on the floor! At that age, though, he had an open cup at mealtimes, but a sippy otherwise.
My son started with a regular cup (so I would guess somewhere around 8-9 months). It made no sense to me to teach him you could hold a cup upside down and then have to reteach him later. An yes it was messy at first - we just put a small amount in the cup at the start and then refilled it.
We still use sippies in the car and my son is 4. When we were getting rid of the sippy I would I let him have his sippy but would also,when possible, sit with him and let him use a cup to get more practice. Drinking, sipping with straws, and using sippy cups can also help develop different muscles in a little mouth. Talk to your speech therapist about it.:)
Oh my. My daughter is 5 and I still give her a sippy cup. Some of the smoothies she drinks will stain if they spill. My daughter started around two years old. I will only let her use a regular cup in the kitchen. I usually have enough to clean and don't want her adding to it. She does prefer using a straw with a regular cup, but I think all kids do.
