When Did You Know You Were Having Twins?
My talked to my doctor because I am only 16 weeks and I am huge already! This is my second pregnancy, but it just feels different. My doctor said that my placenta is larger than it should be for this far along in my pregnancy and said it could be twins but that I will have to wait 3 weeks for my ultrasound. I am wondering when other moms found out they were having twins.
So What Happened?™
Thank you all for your responses! So, our ultrasound was on Friday and it is just one baby! He or she is healthy and moved a lot! Just one big baby in my big tummy! :)
It was fun to think about the possibility of having twins for a while though... I think it kept my husband on pins and needles. :)

I found out I was having twins @ my first dr.'s appt. He did the vaginal ultrasound and saw two sacs then two little flickers which were their heartbeats. They are now 2 years old and I am expecting a singleton in 3 weeks. If you have any ?'s at all do not hesitate to contact me. Good Luck!!

I didn't know twins until my standard 20 wk u/s. Everyone at work kept commenting on my size. I just told them to shut up and leave me alone. Docs never picked up a second heartbeat. I didn't gain an ounce the first 12 wks, then gained 13 pounds in the next month, but docs never questioned that either. I accused the poor lady performing the u/s of lying to me.

We found out we were having twins at 8 wks(with 2 older boys at home, however, my cousin found out a few years earlier at her standard 20wk US. She had 2 fraternal boys, we had fraternal boy/girl twins. We both carried full term, and although she had to have a c-section, I was able to go naturally with no meds, born 8 min apart. They are indeed a blessing, and are now 2 1/2 yrs old.
Go with what feels right for you(regarding your doctor) and you will end up doing the best for you and your baby/ies. :)

I found out at my first doctor's appointment when I was 7 weeks. He did a vaginal ultrasound. I was definitely suprised. I think it must depend on your doctor when they do an ultrasound. I had several done during my pregnancy. Good luck!

Things are much different now than when I had our twins in the '60's. I didn't find out until the second child was born!! The doctors, nurses, and especially me, were all surprised. My husband had to find doubles of everything to take our twins home looking alike.
Our son and his wife found out in her 4th or 5th month they were having twins, and she spent a lot of her pregnancy in the hospital or at home in bed as a precaution. That pregnancy took place in the 80's.
Good luck with your new baby (or babies).

I found out at 7 weeks, but we did IVF, so they always do an ultrasound that early to check for multiples. I'm surprised that if your doctor has a suspision of twins though, that he's not trying to verify it now, rather than in 3 weeks. They consider twins a high risk pregnancy and usually monitor you more closely, just to make sure both babies are doing well. I started wearing maternity clothes around 12 weeks, I believe. I went to 38 1/2 weeks with them and I did get pretty big...all belly, but it was huge! I hope find out soon and have a healthy pregnancy.

Congrats E.!
I found out that I was having twins around 10 weeks. My doctor had an idea that I may be having twins but wanted to wait until an ultrasound could confirm this. He could hear another faint heartbeat but said that it could have been mine since it was so faint, then he asked if I could be further along than what I had originally thought because I had a rather large pooch by this time. "Oh, well uh, you may be having twins but we have to wait until an ultrasound is done to find out for sure." My heart quit at that moment!
My first ultrasound introduced me to one of my boys, the other could not be confirmed because he was hiding behind his brother. With the next ultrasound I finally got to see that there were TWO. The techinician asked me if there was twins in my family and I about jumped off the table I was so excited. All I could say was, "Really?". I drove home with a smile on my face that no one could chisle off. I had always wanted twins but was under the impression that it wasn't my generation to have them. Guess what?! That skipping a generation thing doesn't always happen.
Because I am a very small framed person, they expected the twins to be rather small, just about 4 and a half pounds each. When they were born (c-section) they weighed a nice healthy 5 lbs 11 ounces and 6 lbs 7 ounces. Today, they are very energetic, wonderful 4 year old young men that really keep mom on her toes.
Good luck E., and again, Congratulations!

I had twins and I found out at 6 weeks gestation. Your babies are PLENTY big enough to show up on an ultrasound as 2 seperate beings. You could also listen for 2 heartbeats as well. Demand an ultrasound! Mothers of multiples are at a higher risk than other pregnant women. Your doctor will give you one you just need to demand it or go someplace else. Don't settle for inferior care.

I have twins and I found out when I was 7 weeks along because I asked the nurse what the chances are for having twins....I got lucky and was able to find out early because the nurse didn't have problems doing ultrasounds that early. However, I never got really big with them at all so I wouldn't have expected it and was glad to find out early so I could handle the shock. They are now 5 years old and I have a 4 year old as well. I do have a day care kid that's Mom is pregnant and when she was 3-4 months along she looked like she was much further along and just grew into it because her doctor told her that sometimes you just show faster with your second and she only has 1 baby. Good luck! If you have any question please let me know.
