When Baby Can Have Yogurt?

My infant nutrition books vary on when baby can have yogurt. What is the current consensus of when it is okay? My daughter is 7 1/2 months old. She is not allergic to dairy, as she has had milk based formula on occasion (I breast feed & pump when at work, but sometimes she has a huge appetite...hence the formula supplementation). Thanks in advance!!

What can I do next?

With my children, at about 12 months I offered them yogurt.
They do have "baby yogurts" available. Make sure the yogurt you give a baby is "whole milk" yogurt. After 1 year old, they must have "whole" milk because the milk fat in it is crucial for brain growth.

Per our Pediatrician, give whole milk "plain" yogurt.... and add your own minced up fruit to it. I personally would not buy the "adult" or "kids" yogurts for a baby... too much sugar in it for their system, and they don't need that. Stick to the "baby" yogurts if you do buy it already pre-made.

Ask your Pediatrician if anything.
Good luck,

I started feeding my little ones yogurt when they were around a year old. (With my first baby it was about a year, with my second daughter, it was maybe 10 months). I used whole milk yogurt, and usually combined either organic fruit or vanilla yogurt with plain yogurt, to cut down on the sugar. I used to sometimes chop up or puree pears or nectarines and mix them in, and sometimes add rice cereal, too.

This is an insteresting link and some info on yogurt and feeding it to infants under a year...

My middle child was around a year when I introduced yogurt, and my son was about 8 months.

my kids started eating yogurt when I started them on solids! I mixed yogurt with mashed bananas, etc. for breakfast! It's so good for them, and you can buy the organic kind which is even better!

About 7-8 months. She will love it! I buy plain whole milk yogurt and mix it with different fruit jars, bananas or cereal.

My doctor suggested 1 year, the same as whole milk. I fed my 1st daughter yogurt before then, but she does have allergies and I wish I would have waited. I am waiting to fed my 2nd child until 1 year.

I started giving my daughter yogurt at aroud 9-10 months. She is now 14 monnths and loves it. I gave her the Yo-Baby yogurt, especially for infants. It is organic and it comes in a variety of flavors, her favorite being the vanilla/banana one (yellow packaging). If you purchase them, they are less expensive at Target then Trader Joes.

My sister buys them at Von/Ralps and they sell them there for $4.29 vs $2.99 at Target. They are delicious and nutritious and come in a six pack.

I would start with just yogurt and later on with bananas and now I put all sorts of fruits and berries in there. They have helped me out tremondously within the last 2 weeks because that is all she would eat due to her molars coming out.

Good luck!

HI L. (love the name by the way, oh and before I got married my last name started with a T...kinda funny) I didn't give my son yogurt until he was close to 1 year. My dad (who is a dr.) and my ped. said that at 1 year you can start giving them "real" dairy. Whole milk and yogurt. I did buy the Yo Baby yogurt and my son loved it and then I started mixing my own fruits in plain yogurt.
My son was and still is a very GOOD eater and he loves fruits and veggies so I used to give him soft fruits (bananas, oranges) and boil veggies until they were soft but hard enough for him to hold and feel like a big boy.
I hope this is helpful.
