I have an old infant carseat (8 years old) and I'm not sure what to do with it now that I don't need it anymore. Is there any way to keep this out of the landfill? I think it's been in a recall (although the website says you just need to call and have a part shipped out), plus it's more than 5 years old, which I think is the limit now, so I'm not sure if anybody could use it in their car anymore. Is there any place that recycles any parts of these? Any other ideas?
Cut the straps, write on it do not use and not safe for use. Destroy the cover. Just throw everything in the garbage once it's been destroyed.

A car seat that is 8 years old may have weak plastic that will not keep a baby safe in a crash. The straps could also be weakend over time. This video shows a crash with an expired car seat.

I don't think there is anywhere in MN that recyles carseats. If it's 8 years old it's probaly safer in the landfil than someone using it as a carseat. I'd demolish it, and just throw it away.
Outdated carseats, according to the county, should be dismantled and discarded. My husband broke ours up, recycled the metal parts and threw out the rest.

Welcome to the car seat conspiracy. They consistently make companies make them better, then recall them when they don't meet the specifications or overreach them. Donate it to ARC or Goodwill. They will see to it that they are recycled if they cannot be resold.
Since it is so old, it needs to be destoyed. Call the fire department or any other place that does car seat checks to see if it can be recycled. But, it will probably go to the landfill.
We cut all the straps off the car seats we've had & my husband took a chain saw to all of them. We tossed up during the Bloomington spring cleaning curbside pickup. I sold the covers on eBay.
