What Does Insurance Cover?? Garage Door

Many of yo responded to my question about the 3 year old who ran into our garage. My insurance company is now saying that they will mot cover the garage door, since it was my property that hit my property. Had he put it in reverse, and hit the neighbor's house, they would cover that. They want my home owner's to pay for it, but the deductible is 3x's higher than the price of the door. I am at a lose...This is a real nightmare. We also lost our dog yesterday..he sneaked out the garage door... animal services picked him up, and now I have to go bail him out!! I wonder how much that's gonna cost!

Has anyone has a similar experience, and if so, what was the outcome?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I resigned myself to paying for the door myself. I really thought I had a case for the insurance company to pay the damages.....
I'm getting the garage door fixed this morning.. A little bummed out since it is an out pocket expense! 600.00 for a 16 x 7, I guess it's not too bad, but this is a hit (no pun intended) we just could not afford! I did bail the dog out.. not for the sake of the kids, but for my husband.. it was his dog. Impound fees and registration were just slightly more than 40. Feeling less stresses now that I have had a good night's sleep. Arrow garage door gave me the best price up front, I called several places, because I was not sure who was paying, I wanted to get the best price. We got a pretty thick door for less than what others charged for their base model, plus we got windows!! (for light at the end of the tunnel!)

BTW:
I think maggie's response about leaving the dog at the pound was not meant to be taken literally. I took it as a joke, and acctually chucked when I read it.. God knows I needed a laugh! I never would have seriously considered leaving the flea bag there.
oh yeah..
MY SON WILL NEVER DRIVE, AGAIN!!!

If you have a good Insurance Agent, your deductable should be 1% of the value of your home. If your deductable is 3x's more than the cost to fix the door then you dont have to go though with the claim. With every claim you file on your own policy for your property there will always be a deductable. If you dont want to pay your deductable you can tell your claims adjustor you wont be going though with the claim, he may make you put that in writing. Then you can fix the door your self and take a picture of the fixed door to give to your agent to send to your company at renewal time. You never have to follow a claim though when its your policy and your property, it's your right. Hope this helps, I do the above for a living.

C.,

I know how frustrating insurance companies can be...although I do not have any great advise on how to get around this, I can defintely relate to the frustration....and unlike the other answer you received ,I certainly don't think that leaving the dog at the pound is the answer for anybody....I know this would make most of our children very unhappy, and of course it breaks my heart for the dog too. Best of luck to you...I will say a little prayer for you....well maybe I should say a big one(LOL)!!!

I am sorry for your delima. I am actually an insurance adjuster and this sounds correct. The liabilty follows the owner of the vehicle, which would be you, not your daughter. You can not be liable for your own property.

Hi C....sorry about your dilemma. Sounds like the best way to go is to pay for the garage out of pocket and skip insurance. I am glad that your son sounds like he is ok. That couldn've been much worse!

In regard to the response you received from Maggie about leaving your dog at the pound, that is the most irresponsible response you could've received. Sorry, but this type of "thinking" is the reason we have such a high stray/unwanted pet population in this country and such a high unnecessary euthanasia rate. Just so you know, most owner give-ups at the pound(ones who are called but refuse to come get their dogs) are put to sleep. Thousands of wonderful dogs with no issues are put to sleep every day.

Best of luck to you!
