What Are You Baking for the Holidays?

I've got gingerbread, sugar cookies and cranberry loaf cake on the go...but I'm looking for some new ideas this year. What are some of your favorites? What cookie or dessert MUST you or your kids have, to "really" make it feel like the holidays? I'm ready to throw on some carols and pull out my mixer, but I need some inspiration. Anyone?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Mmm! Sounds great, ladies! Lots of cinnamon buns for xmas morning - what a great idea! Does anyone have secret to making them? When I do it, it takes hours - let the dough rise, let the buns rise, bake...how do you manage this on xmas morning? Do you freeze them unbaked? Please let me know! :D Thanks, too, for the links - great ideas! I'm definitely going to try that chocolate toffee thing, too. My sons go nuts over anything pumpkin - what is the pumpkin roll? Would love more details! :D

Pumpkin rolls are amazing, basically pumpkiny/cake bread, rolled with cream cheese and sprinkled in nuts and topped with powdered sugar. That sounds gross, but it is gooood. I use the basic Libby pumpkin recipe on the back of the can, but there are tons more ways to make it. Oh, you can also make a lot and freeze them too. Makes great Christmas gifts and bake sale items b/c you can cut them in large slices, wrap in colored cellophane paper and tie with a pretty bow:

For the chocolate and toffee fans...this one is a major keeper! I made a batch tonight to take to my neighbors house tomorrow. Hopefully it still exists tomorrow so I can take it to them!! BTW-- Its super easy and everyone will be asking you for the recipe!

just made butterscotch coconut jumbles....with oatmeal & pecans.

a batch of choc chips.

1-2-3 PB drops....made w/ Splenda for my diabetic DH.

& a cranberry JackD bread pudding which I serve with lemon sauce. Needs more Jack in it....but dang it, I ran out.

This is all for my ILs Christmas party 2moro....my extended family is gathering next wkend. I'm making an updated German Choc cake, with traditional homemade frosting & a choc ganache filling. Also doing Expresso Shots...which are choc chip cookie-based tartlets with expresso filling & topped w/ a choc-covered expresso bean. A gift box of choc chips for my Uncle, a batch of our family heirloom wine cookies, & ?

Earlier this year, we flipped our dining room into a corner of our great room. The dining room became an extension of our kitchen. My DH & I designed & built a custom island....which is Baking Central for me. Love, love, love it! I was on one side putting the batches together....& my DH was on the other side loading cookie trays for the oven. My younger son was in the kitchen doing the handwash dishes/pans...& general KP duty. Assembly line baking! All of this completed in <3 hours....yeehah!

Hi E.---We have an extensive list that we TRY to get made...most to give as gifts...if they last long enough:

fudge made with choc chips and marshmallows
thumbprint cookies with red/green/white frosting instead of jam/jelly
coconut kiss cookies (like peanut butter kiss but with coconut, cream cheese and almond flavoring)
pecan tassies (little pecan pies with cream cheese/butter crust in mini-cupcake pans)
gingerbread cookies (made into balls then pressed with empty thread spool-looks like a wheel/snowflake pattern on top)
russian teacakes.
Two years ago my middle son moved to the east coast from Michigan. His first Christmas away I asked for his gift wish list. The only 2 things he asked for were Christmas cookies and snippled beans (a special family German way of preserving and preparing a french cut style bean). Made me want to cry. So I HAVE to make a nice cookie assortment to send to him...and my mom who taught me everything I know and doesn't have time to bake all these things...because love from the kitchen is the best
Christmas gift of all.

Let me know if you'd like any recipes. Have fun...and Merry Christmas! D.

Coming from the UK we HAVE to have mince pies (normally served with whipped cream in our house) If you can make pastry, you can do mince pies! Check out recipes online but they are basically pastry base and top with dried fruit in brandy in between, served warm and bite sized...I think Meijers sells mincemeat in jars so they are super easy to make!

I am required by my family to make Christmas wreath cookies, similar to rice crispie treats, so they're easy and fun.
melt together 16 oz mini marshmellows, 1 stick margarine
stir in 3 1/2 tsp green food coloring & 2 tsp vanilla and mix completely
then add 8 cups corn flakes and mix well
drop onto wax paper & form into wreaths. make sure you wet your fingers in between each 1 or it will just stick (my fingers are pretty green by time I'm done! LOL) then add 3 cinnamon dots on each one to look like berries.

Magic Bars ~ in a 9X13 pan layer:
1 stick melted margarine
1 cup graham cracker crumbs
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup coconut
1 can sweetened condensed milk
bake at 350 for about 15 mins until the coconut looks a little golden
(I usually add more than a cup of everything, just so I have a good layer, then cook it a little longer)

I don't do any baking, really, save for cinnamon buns for xmas morning and the xmas cake. My mom does a cookie house with the kids --enough sugar for 10 people!

The only 2 things I have GOT to do is make peanut brittle for gifts and home made cinnamon rolls for Christmas morning. I may do cookies or almond bark stuff or puppy chow, but those are extras...

We have to have bizcochitos, every year. So, I'll make those and some other ones that I come across. I love cookies that include chocolate and mint together. I'll go into my ziplist, and come back and edit with links.

I don't like to bake.
But will for my kids.
I can bake well but don't like it.
But am a good bread maker.

My Husband, can really bake a great Yule Log cake, as is customary in his culture and traditions. His looks just like the photo in the cookbook.
He's a good baker.

I personally have not baked anything yet for the holidays.
I plan on buying.
LOL
