I live on 5 acers that is fenced and my house is about 3000 square foot, maybe not very big to some but huge for us. My daughter is 41/2 and with spring approaching is giving me signals she would like to be more indepent and explore the surroundings a bit more. we have gotten her a dog and he is very protective of her. But he can't protect her from everything. i would like to know if anybody knows of a device that she can wear that will provide us with a simple two way communication like a walkie talkie? thank you, tess U.

What can I do next?

I don't know of one, but would suggest something that lets you constantly hear her intead of only when she presses a button to talk. If she gets very scared, she may forget to press the button to talk, and if she falls, she may not be capable of anything more than a scream.

Don't know about walkie talkies but I have heared of an alarm system I want to say I saw it in an ad for target, what it is is a watch the child wears and if they fall into water then an alarm in the house sounds. don't know the range on it. but I would think that most electronics stores would have something like that for you to use.

My boyfriend and I looked everywhere for water-proof walkie-talkies last summer (for kiteboarding). We had a really hard time finding one was even water resistant. What we did fine were these really cool water-proof cases that you can put any electronic in for full protection from all of the elements. The brand name is DRY-PAK, they're soft plastic bags with a water-proof locking seal and a string to hang around your neck. Not only do they protect against water, but they also keep mud, sand etc out. We got ours at Big 5 Sporting Goods for $10.99 each. Good luck! :)

not a walkie talkie type of device but rather an alarm type should you feel like you "lost" your child or that he/she ran off somewhere they should not have. It started in Europe and a documentary ie 20/20 nwas done on it. Sorry I an't remember the exact product name.

Hi T.,

I don't know of any device that might work in that situation except for outside security cameras. It's great that your yard is fenced in but I wouldn't trust my daughter to be outside by herself (mine is also 4 1/2) without being in my eyesite......

You can find such a device at an electronics store such as Radio Shack. You may need to use a little immagination to find a way to attach it to her clothes so that she doesn't lose it.

I recommend that you still limit the distance that she can go. 5 acres is an awful lot of space in which to look for her if she does need you. Perhaps staking and stringing a rope to indicate boundaries. I would also walk the entire space with her before she goes exploring on her own so that you will know what's out there.

I wish that we could let all of our kids explore their world, even in the city, as we did when I was young.

Michelle's advice about always being able to hear her is good. Perhaps you could modify a baby moniter.

I agree with others that a walkie talkie is not the best way to go with a 4 year old. It's too hard for them to push the buttons and talk. I did find some walkie talkies that hook on the ear like the popstars and has a little microphone that comes down in front of the mouth, and they are voice activated. But I don't remember where I got them from.
The problem with the baby monitor is that you could only hear her,but not talk with her.
I'm glad you want to let your little on outside for some unsupervised exploration, but maybe you could put up a small temporary fenced area, little ones get distracted and lost so easily.
Have fun and be safe
