Vaccinations - Aurora,CO

So my husband has been watching this show called "The Conspiracy Theory" with Jesse Ventura and it is scaring the crud out of me. They just had one on the other night about vaccinations warning of the dangers and other horribly scary things connected to Vaccinations. Don't get me wrong, I am not blind and have looking into all the vaccinations that are to be given to my children. I have even turned down some of them that are not required to get into school, but now I feel horrified that these things are far worse than I ever imagined.

Any of you out there able to enlighten me. I also plan on talking with my pediatrician, I am sure I can figure what his comments will be but I don't know where to go to get real information to make an educated decision. I cannot make decisions like this based on a TV show, not to mention the fact that if you don't do vaccinations do you just home school? Aack!!! I am just a mess over this.

Stay off the internet. Don't check out the web sites. And, Oh boy, don't watch the TV, that is a new one! Go to your doctor, and if you really don't like what they say, get a new doctor you can trust.

Go to old grave yards, and read the smallest headstones from 100 years ago. Learn about one of the first vaccines for small pox. If you want to learn about risk, learn about how many people died in the 18th centrury just to get the vaccine. They spent 6 weeks in isolation, suffered huge side effects, and as many as 10% contracted small pox and many died. They still were willing to take that risk becaue they knew the horror of childhood mortality and much shorter lives that we take for granted now. We expect that our children will be born live, live through childhood without a life threatening illness, grow old, and out live us. It is because of modernity that you have the privalege to reject it, because without these life saving offerings, you would jump at the wonderful science that could save half your babies without so much as a second thought, and be grateful for the opportunity to avoid the heartache that so many families encountered prior to the 1950's.

Also check out the recent pertusis outbreak. It is running rampant through my city right now, and this sort of thing is in our future. Adults and children should be protecting newborns who cannot get this vaccine who are at the highest risk of death, by getting boosters.

Finally, check out the deseases your are protecting your children from with vaccines, because that should enter into your thought process. They are worse than any speculation about prevention based on conspiracy theory, anecdote, and fear, and remember, those of us who do vaccinate protect the children who are not, but the fewer there are, the greater the risk to those who are not.

There are things to scare you out of anything if you watch it and buy into it.
Google is another way to not know what the heck.....
As far as vaccines, my children had all of them on schedule. They had no reactions, no problems, no reason for me to regret it.
All the children from my family were vaccinated and none of the horror stories you hear happened to us. None of them.
I have no vaccine horror stories, but I have a non-vaccine story.
My aunt suffered the effects of polio as a child and all her life because she contracted polio before the vaccine. Knowing what she went through and seeing it with my own eyes pretty much made the decision to vaccinate clear.
I saw what happened with no vaccine as opposed worrying about the risk of having them.
I won't send the links about living in iron lungs, etc....
That's a scare tactic in istelf.
Vaccinating is a personal decision.
I, personally, am glad I never had to worry about what would happen if I didn't. But that's just me and my experience.

Best wishes.

I choose to spread some of my children's out so they only received 2 shots at a time, but with all this debate and all these people now choosing not to vaccinate, I just thank god my boys are now both old enough to be fully vaccinated, and thus fully protected.

Much of the fear about vaccines is just plain myth, like the autism link, that not only has been disproved, but it was shown that the doctor said it to make money on the new "safer" vaccine he had just patented, and he had his medical license taken away (look up Dr. Wakefield). When it comes to vaccines you have to look at the cost to benefit ratio. Look at measles, it is highly contagious, and can spread from acrossed a room. If your child gets it they are very likely to die. A carrier can affect many before they know they are carrying, and an un-vaccinated child can expose not only others who choose not to vaccinate, but all the children who are yet too young for the vaccine. There was a case not long ago where a 8 month old baby was killed by a 8 year old un-vaccinated child that was exposed to measles. When my son did not want to get his polio vaccine, I took him to my old work to meet a man who did not get his shot, got polio, and lost his leg. The reason we do not see these devastating diseases much anymore is BECAUSE we vaccinate. If you choose not too, that is your right, but than you should keep your child out of school and away from parks and the like where they could be exposed and than pass these things on to children who either are too young to vaccinate or can not for medical reason, because they did not make the choice to be put at risk.

The MMR is given at the same age at which the first signs of autism tend to appear, but there is no proof of a causal link. For the truth about where this myth came from, and why it holds on, you can not only look up Dr. Wakefield, but you can watch a documentary on it called "a does of controversy" that explains it all as well. I think that autism is just such a devastating thing for a parent to accept that they feel they have to find someone to blame, even if it is false.

Wanted to add that if, even after learning the truth, the MMR still makes you nervous, you can get a split shot rather than the multi one. That is the very reason Wakefield made up the link, he patented a new measles vaccine to be used as part of a split shot to replace the MMR.

I believe vaccinations are neccissary as a parent. I keep up to date with all my sons because honestly I would rather take the risks of the vaccinations then what he could get if he didnt get them. Especially with all the new diseases coming out and the old ones resurfacing again. I did research and I personally think they are fine. Vaccinations have been given to people for long, long time and they wouldnt be giving them or recomending them for no reason.

Its every parents personal opinion and decision but I personally believe that they are for the best of our children.

I don't vaccinate and yes my child still goes to traditional public school. You do not legally have to vaccinate. You can always make the choice to do so or you can selectively vaccinate, delay vaccinations or simply just not vaccinate. If I were you I would look into doing my research in a library as well as with other local groups of those whom do alternative vaccination schedules. There's tons of info out there and it's best if you take the time to sort through it all and then choose what you feel is best for your family and in your situation. Please do not let anyone or anything push you into a decision one way or another.

Here are a few things to get you started:

The Vaccine Book by Dr. Robert Sears

The Sanctity of Human Blood by Dr. Tim O'Shea

The Vaccine Guide: Risks and Benefits For Children and Adults by Randall Neustaedter

Both my kids are fully vaccinated and are both Gifted.
Vaccines protect our children from deadly and crippling diseases.
if I did not vaccinate and my child caught something that left him or her crippled ( polio)or unable to have children (mumps or measles) I would never forgive myself.
What you saw was designed to scare people and was likely full of half truths and flat out lies.
Because more and more parents are choosing not to vaccinate we are seeing a come back of those diseases that were once all but gone.

I stopped vaccinating both my children after I realized my son was autistic. My daughter had some vaccine reactions too but she is neurotypical. It is a very personal choice and there are strong opinions on both sides. Someone else recommended Sears book which would be worth reading. There is also an old book by Dr. Stephanie Cave called What Your Doctor May NOT Tell You About Children's Vaccinations. I know many, many mother's whose children regressed into autism after vaccinations. I'm going to do a you tube video or something on it because it really is quite interesting to hear all the stories. SafeMinds and Generation Rescue have information to balance what your pediatrician will tell you. Also if you do chose to vaccinate read the vaccine insert to learn of the side effects. Also know there is a database which holds the information of vaccine reactions that have been reported although probably few have been reported. I don't know CO law but almost every state allows exemptions for vaccinations to get into school.

Is Jesse Ventura is a medical expert? Doctors go into medicine to HELP people and there is no "conspiracy". Do people think they join an evil secret club during medical schoool? But then "experts" like Jenny mcCarthy (ummm..what is her training and expertise?) and others try to scare people. Scientists have done numerous studies that show no link between vaccines and autism, but the vaccines are linked to autism only b/c autism shows up at the same time....for any kid, vaccinated or unvaccinated. Autism is a genuine concern, which has been investigated!

Yes, please do your research you sound like a diligent parent and you should be. I understand your concerns, there are a lot of things that aren't good for kids in today's society. Just there needs to be facts behind it. I just think it's easy for people to make things up and twist the real scientifc info and scare people from something that is helpful for kids and to society :) Go to genuine websites like American medical association, assoc of family physicians...etc.

There are some vaccinations that are not necessary at all, and some that cause problems. Both of my boys with their first MMR shot reacted and got measles with the shot...they will not get their boosters. If you choose to not have vaccinations then there is a form that the school has that is a waiver which basically states that you have chosen not to vaccinate your child. They cannot force you to vaccinate to go to school and they cannot tell you your child cannot go to school.

Honestly....most vaccinations do not last more than 5 years. This has been proven by the FDA, so I personally do not see the need. I talked with my children's pediatrician and she, of course, said that if they did not get the vaccines they would die. Now, I wish I would have just said no.

My main concern is that some of the vaccines are made from cell lines from aborted babies. Actually there is a new study that is looking at the link between autism and the shots that contain those cell lines. It's interesting. Check out the web sight for Cog for life. It can explain more about the study. I have a niece who is autistic and my son quite talking right after receiving the MMR. Scary!

Well this is a tough decision that is only yours to make. It's hard because both sides are very heated and so it's not so black and white. My husband and I have decided not to vaccinate our children. They are 6 and 4. In the state of Texas they are not required for school. You can get a wavier to give to the school but that's not a problem for us anyway since we home school as well. You'll need to Google it to see what the law is in your area. Most people in my area think it is required because they simply don't question it.
I looked long and hard and researched it as best that I could. My worries came after a co worker and friend of my husband's was convinced that his little girl became autistic after receiving her MMR. She was fine before the injection and then just faded away. It was both sad and frightening to think that maybe something could be going on that appeared to be helping our children could actually hurt them. After reading the many mistakes in the past with vaccines and just the fact that they would even consider putting mercury in a vaccine made me think long and hard about putting that into my child. Most people would argue that they don't do that anymore other than in the flu shots. My argument is that they even did it to begin with! Bottom line is that I don't trust them. The vaccination schedule is nuts. Way too many! When I took my concerns with me to the doctors office on our first well baby appt I asked why they would give a one day old baby a Hep shot? I mean my baby is not having unprotected sex or shooting up. I would think that he risk level would be fairly low. He explained to me that there will BE an epidemic in the next 10-20 years! Then why are we doing it now? Weird. Most all of the diseases that they are vaccinated against are not life threatening at all. Most problems arise when a secondary infection sets in and is not treated in a timely matter. Take Tetanus, if a person was to contract it they would NOT develop a natural immunity from it. So why would a vaccine do different? Makes no sense to me.
Anyway I made the decision for us. I don't have a problem with any one that chooses to do different than me but I do have a problem with people that blindly move forward without questioning or becoming proactive in any of their medical care.
I wish you the best with your decision for your family.
Best Regards,
C.

HI-
In Colorado, all you have to do is sign a waiver saying they are not vaccinated. The school will send them home if there is an outbreak of something.

Doctors are smart people--some smarter than others--but they are not gods. You have to inform yourself. Although I don't have an MD after my name, I studied bio-chemistry and anatomy and can talk to my FIL's neurologist using all the medical jargon and understanding it. So I consider myself to be just as smart as my doctor. I understand how to look at medical studies. For me, the risk the vaccines presented outweighed their benefit. It turns out I have super sensitive children and medically they cannot get vaccinated. I had a gut feeling about that before I actually knew it. If I had followed our pediatrician's advice, it could have killed my oldest. There is lots and lots of evidence out there showing extreme risks. There is lots and lots of evidence that is inconclusive. There is also lots and lots of evidence that they are safe. I think it depends on the child--If you have to measure out medicine based on weight, how does it make sense that the same amount of vaccine is okay for every child? There's no way that one size fits all makes sense. You've gotten some great advice about where to look for more information. I say look and see what your gut says.
Good luck!

When my children were little I had a doctor for them - a g.p. - who always said, "People will tell you what to do and what to think about everything concerning your babies - so if you're puzzled, thank all those people and then give me a call." And I would, because I knew I could trust what he said.

If that's the situation with you and your pediatrician, take your doctor's recommendation. Television producers do not really care about you or your children; their bottom line is money.

You'll most certainly get many varied responses. However, I would recommend reviewing the following two sites:

http://www.nvic.org/ (national vaccine information center)

Also check out www.mercola.com and do a search for vaccines

Myself personally, I've opted out of vaccines. I did this after much research, discussions with medical professionals and went with my gut. My chiropractor said his parents never vaccinated any of their 8 children and he feels it is the best gift they could have given him. But go with your gut, with what your mama meter tells you.

It's interesting to me how people will tell you to stay away from the internet, friends, TV (?), and virtually anyone who will say ANYTHING negative about vaccines. Perhaps such individuals wish to return to the days when priests and other "learned" elites handed down information, and sometimes misinformation, from on high.

Of course not everything you read or see is correct - it never has been. That goes for the medical profession, too. Are we to suspend our common sense when it comes to a certain medical intervention - vaccines? Are we to believe that a "one-size-fits-all" policy is appropriate for the vast majority of people, especially children? If we dare to ask questions are we heretics worthy of contempt for "endangering" others (not that I agree with that disgusting tactic)? Does this strike anyone else as down right medieval?

I am not anti-vaccine, I am pro-informed consent. Inform yourself. If I had it to do over, I would ask many more questions. For instance, why did the schedule change from when I was a kid (the 70's) to when my kids were babies (the 90's)? Why did the schedule change in the THREE YEARS between my children's births? Why have we added even more vaccines since then? How much is too much? Have we ever studied the cumulative effects of ALL of these vaccines given in their totality to this generation of children? Are we going to talk forever about eradicating small pox/polio and - ipso facto - translate that to a rubber stamp for the ever-increasing number of new vaccines TODAY? Imho vaccination policy is a higly nuanced issue not suitable for trite talking points.

Check out a book from the library by Stephanie Cave, MD - "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Children's Vaccinations" (or something along those lines - can't remember the exact name). I have also heard good things about Dr. Sears's book (newer) but haven't read it myself.

www.nvic.org
www.iansvoice.org (one family's story)

I am not a medical professional of any type - this is just my "mom" opinion based on my own experience with my own children. Of course anyone making any type of medical decision should seek advice from qualified professionals, seeking multiple opinions where necessary.

Good luck.

This is such a hot topic. A conspiracy theory is just that, a theory. Some based on fear, others fact. Keep on asking questions and researching. The internet can be helpful but can also be hard to find straight information. Remember unless its pure data, everything is written with an opinion. I have given my daughter all her shots, with no problems. I have known tons of kids with no problems. Think of this, have you talked to your grandparents about all the things that killed kids when they were growing up? My friends mom has polio and I am so thankful that has been wiped out. There is a rise in illness that could be wiped out due to fear. It is up to us that can vaccinate to protect the ones that cant due to allergies. Not to mention with all the "evil" of western medicine strangely enough when they get the mumps, croup ect or any other awful illness it is western medicine to come to the rescue. That being said it is still good to be informed and question things you don't understand. If your going to your pediatrician, then hopefully you trust him. Use him as a sounding board. Be careful of shows, they go for shock value to make ratings. Good luck.

You could make yourself INSANE if you fully considered the risks involved in the things we do and EAT everyday. Have you seen the links on facebook about McDonalds food? you can come up with YOUR OWN vaccination schedule!! I am not opposed to the vaccines themselves, just the overloaded schedule on such tiny little bodies. My daughter who is in Kinder this year was behind and we had to sign a forn saying that we were seeing a pediatrician and "catching up". my daughter that is 2 has only had 2 complete vaccines (the HIB and dTap) bc those are the ones she is most at risk for. there is NOTHING wrong with waiting and taking it slow!! I usually just schedule one at a time and waited to begin them util 3-6 months. good luck.
Personally, I think there is a link with autism and vaccines.... perhaps a genetic sensitivity combined with toxic ovcerload of too many, too soon. Not that just one will cause it.... they have only ever tested ONE ingredient (thimerasol) against the autism theory and most vaccines have about 35 ingredients. just FYI

Question everything and research, research, research. Ever wonder why there are so many more vaccines now than when we were kids? Google Texas Gov. Rick Perry and the hpv vaccine. He pushed pushed, pushed to get it made mandatory in the state of Texas and guess what....the pharmaceutical company who supplies the vaccine was lining his pocket. It happens all the time. When you hear "studies prove...blah, blah, blah..." find out who conducted the studies, and who funded them. Follow the money trail. Read Dr. Sears vaccine book. It is totally unbiased and very easy to understand. Read what he says about the aluminum content. Many vaccines have way more aluminum than the amount deemed safe to ingest. Yet we pump our infants full of the stuff and NO ONE has proven that it is safe to do so. Seriously?? How is this even legal, let alone recommended?? Don't take anyone's word for anything. Do your own research and then decide what is best for your family. Your child has only YOU to look out for them. Not your pediatrician, not scientists, not the CDC and certainly not the politicians and pharmaceutical companies. It's very scary and the more you learn and educate yourself, the scarier it becomes. Best of luck!

I don't know about it being a conspiracy, but getting vaccinations is sure treated as doctrine. I recommend www.mercola.com, mentioned earlier by someone else. All the articles on there name their sources. To balance it out, go to the Center for Disease Control website, www.cdc.gov. Before I was scheduled to vaccinate my first child, I went in and searched each vaccination's risks and side effects individually. After reading them, I decided I didn't want to risk SIDS, brain swelling, seizures, etc on my brand new baby. Again, this was all from the official government website.

I once went to a free seminar at Kloor Chiropractic that was quite eye-opening and had an incredible amount of research. Their website is http://kloorchiropractic.com. If you talk to Dr. Trish there, she can probably point you in the right direction for more resources.

I researched tons and found a middle ground...
While I think getting vaccinated is very important, I didn't like the amount kids are given now a days.
So I found a doc that was ok with a delayed schedule.
Instead of lets say 4 shots at a time, I would do 2 one month and 2 the next. Sure it meant I had to take my girls to the doc EVERY month, but I felt it was better for them in the long run. It was a very easy routine and pattern we did and when my next little one came soon after her sister, we knew that would be the same plan.
We never had any fevers and they made it through all shots just fine. My oldest is 2 1/2 and finally just got her MMR. I did wait an extra year on that one. My 1 year old has had all her shots, but will need chicken pox next month and I will wait to do her MMR until after 2.
I for sure get lots of eye rolls from other moms, but I like to point out to them that our kids will have had ALL the same shots by the time they are in school, if not earlier. Like I said my 2 year old is now totally inline with all her little friends. I just did it slower is all... of course I am a stay at home mom and thus didn't have to worry about a daycare requiring them. You for sure have to look into schools and the laws.
Just read up on delayed schedules... truly you need to understand how important it is to have kids protected, but you can find a way to do it on a level that is easier to swallow!
Lots of luck!

I know this is a hot topic. I am another mom who has vaccinated all 5 of my kids but done it slowly. I just didn't feel good about giving so many shots to such a tiny baby or child. So we do 1 or 2 at a time and they still get them all in on time. Also, I wait as long as possible for the MMR b/c I know of 3 moms that swear their child changed after that particular shot. I don't know if I totally believe it is linked but why not be careful if it is?

Also, I believe in homeopathic drops which help to clear out the vaccination so that they don't linger in the liver and they clear out of their system but also vaccinate them. I use deseret biological incorporated brand and it really does seem to help with making them more comfortable after their shots. Best of luck, I am sure you will find what is best for you and your family. Trust your gut- even though some people are fine getting all their shots, perhaps others aren't and there is a link.

Vaccines are NOT mandatory to get into school in most every state, you simply turn over the vaccination record card, and sign the waiver on the back. Sign your name next to the "philosophical" exemption. They just use intimidation to make you feel like you have to do it but you aren't required to. Start there. You can find many articles at Mercola.com about vaccinations and help with understanding rules. Also there is a good book called What your doctor's may not tell you about children's vaccinations. You are really woried about what a professional wrestler has to say about your child's health, not to mention all the other children your child interacts with? Just from my perspective, my children had all their vaccines on time as did every child of my friends and not one of them has adverse reactions, nor did they have polio, mumps, measles, pertussis, ruebella, chicken pox, hepatitis, flu or any other serious illness. I had almost all of them because of my age and they were MISERABLE. Listen to your child's pediatrician not some sensationalized TV host who cares about nothing but ratings and making money.
