Uterine Infection in 7 Yr Old Dog (Pyometria)

My dog was diagnosed the other day with Pyometria and having surgery this morning to be spayed.
SHe was in really bad condition before the surgery and I'm soooooo scared she's not going to make it.
Has anyone ever had this happen to their dog and they survived??
Thank you for any helpful info

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Well Moms, So far so good. My sweet little doggy had it "really" bad! Her uterus weighed almost 6 lbs and the vet said it should have been the size of a pencil.
She pulled through the surgery and is now on her way to recovery.
She had one of the best veterinary teams working on her and I couldn't have been happier with whom we went with.
The clinic is Pet Doctor in Rockwall and they're just awesome!! Some of the most caring people I could have ever met to care for my dog.
We were so blessed they were able to save her with the condition she was in.

Thank you so much to everyone who responded and sent me well wishes!
I am just so overjoyed she survived and on the road to recovery.
Thanks again Moms!!

Yep, my dog had the same condition and had surgery the same day. She came through it and withing 3-5 days was back to her happy self. She went on to live a full and healthy life. She was 3 when she had the surgery and 13 when she died.

I worked in an Animal Hospital as well, and saw many spays for Pyometria. It's good you caught it, because it can be fatal if not taken care of in time. The survival rate is actually pretty good after the surgery. Just have her take it easy, and tell everyone you know to spay their dogs early!!

Uterine problems are NOT the same as Urinary tract infections.

My cat had UTIs all the time and once they fixed her, she never had another again and has been the happiest cat. I hope all is well with your dog.

Hi N.. I was a vet tech for 4 years and have assisted with many dog spays when they had Pyometria. It does make the surgery a little more difficult and risky but 99% of dogs do great. This is one of the reasons vets encourage spaying before they get older. I am sorry you guys are going through this but she will be fine I am sure. Where do you live? Have you been using the vet for a long time? If so, then I am sure she is in good hands. Please let me know how it goes. Good luck and blessed be.

I worked in a Vet Clinic when I was in college, and I saw plenty of dogs with pyrometria come through with no problems. Good luck. Hopefully everything will work out for your pup as well.
