So I went to the doctor last Friday and my ear was totally fine, went to the dentist yesterday and got horrible news. The tooth that my old dentist is wanting to put a crown on doesn't need one yet, but the crown my old dentist did about 3 years ago was a bad job and has to be redone. I just had my teeth cleaned about 4 months ago and got a clean bill of health, but yesterday at my new dentist they said my crown is bad and that is what is causing all my pain AND I have EIGHT (yep 8) cavaties. WTH?

Side note: My SIL works at the new dentist office and she too saw all 8 cavaties.

Not really sure how they have been missing all these cavaties since I get my teeth cleaned every 6 months. I have a $10,000 dollar smile (literally) so I don't want to waste my parents money and have bad teeth.

So how do I report this bad dentist so everyone knows about him and his bad work?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I switched dentists because my old dentist only worked 3 weeks out of the month and never on Fridays. It was harder than hell to get an appointment. I am in pain and suffered an entire 3 day weekend because he doesn't offer an emergency number.

The truth is probably somewhere in the middle so, even though it is a pain, how about a third opinion to see where the truth lies.

It has been my own personal experience that dental opinions vary widely. Almost to the point that makes you wonder whether one dentist has a balloon payment coming due!

Why did you switch dentists in the first place?

That's crazy! I had the opposite problem. I saw a new dentist only to find out I had like 7 cavities. So I went back (further away) to my old dentist, to find out I had NONE, ZERO!

Before you go defaming someone's reputation, I would get another opinion (even if your SIL works at the place). A lot of dentists have bright, shiny new offices to pay for, and that's how they make their money. I find it highly unusual that you could have 8 cavities that weren't seen by the previous dentist 6 months ago. Get another opinion, and if doc #3 agrees that doc #1 missed this, then you can report doc #1 to the Missouri Dental Board. (BTW: my former husband is a dentist, and I used to handle all the finances for his office, so I know a little about this.)

My first dentist messed up, too! When I finally went to a new dentist, I learned that my bridge was done incorrectly, my crowns weren't right either and I should have had a crown over a tooth that later broke because of the omission. I spent thousands of dollars making it better. My mother is far worse - her teeth were so bad after this guy's work that she has had to have two surgeries this year to repair the damage and make it right.

But we can't report him - he's dead! At least he's not maiming anyone else anymore.

Write a review on Angie's List.

That's where I found my dentist.

You can give him bad reviews online. Places like Yelp and I think there is a website called "rate my doc" or something similar.

If he truly screwed up you can file a complaint with Missouri Dental Board. They are the regulating board for dentists in your state. If he gets enough complaints he could have his license pulled, pay fines, etc.
