Types of Potty Chairs/seats

I used the potty chair for all three and would do it again, it seemed to make them more secure than climbing up to sit on the toilet and less frightening. My older kids had a wood potty, with built in toilet paper holder on the side and loved it, for my little guy I used the Fisher-Price Froggy Potty and we both loved it, too. It kept him low to the ground and secure, has a high front to prevent spillovers with a boy, and no splash guard to get injured on, the pot was easy to clean, I see it now comes in pink for girls.

But one of my grandsons learned strictly on the seat on the toilet, Mom said she didn't want to have to train him a second time so it was as simple as to stop using the seat when he was big enough.

We started off with a separate potty (Fisher Price Royal Stepstool Potty), but my daughter got freaked out by the musical thing and refused to sit on it. :) So we put the potty ring on top of the adult toilet, and she uses the stepstool portion to climb up onto the adult toilet with kid seat ring. The nice thing is, we can take the separate chair if we go out somewhere or on long trips (which was handy while we were potty training).

We got handed down a Bjorn potty and a Safety First seat. We use both. The potty is great for things like road trips and the seat is good for use in a secondary bathroom. DD was most comfortable on the potty at first and now she mostly uses the insert, but sometimes still the potty. If you go for the insert, you should get a nice stepstool. (Or get one anyway for reaching the sink.)

We use generic Kandoo wipes for messy jobs, which seems to make it easier for her. I didn't feel like I had to teach her twice. She just figured it out when she was ready for the next step.

We chose a bjiorn potty chair (I like it because it is simply designed, very stable, and easy to clean.) I chose a sperate potty chair because we started around 18 months, putting her on the potty while I would go to the potty. She then practiced wiping (even though she was usually still dry) and helped me flush and say good bye to whatever I put in the potty. After she got the hang of it all, she started asking to sit on the big seat and we let her. She has never used a seperate potty seat that goes on the toilet and I think this has given her confidence to use "strange" toilets (like at friends houses and eventually public restrooms).

We have been happy with the progression we chose and have just gotten out the chair for little sister who is almost 17 months.

We used a potty chair until after they were potty trained then switched to a potty seat with a step stool. I did find the coolest thing ever, it's a toilet seat with a second smaller potty seat attached. So you have adult toilet seat, kiddie toilet seat, and lid all in one. I bought it at home depot and it's made by Bemis. I wish I had found it years ago since it completely eliminates the pee getting between the seat and the bottom (why are they two pieces anyway?!).
