My 15 month old son is showing signs that he needs one nap. I was wondering how you Moms helped your little one go to one nap from two. I have heard of different techniques but don't know how they exactly work. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi M.
My son goes to daycare so when he transitioned into the toddler room, they just did it cold turkey and it worked fine with him. Maybe you can start your son with just some downtime in the crib and not a nap (put some books and toys in there) and then when he's ready, give it up all together. Good luck!

I just delayed my son's morning nap until he seemed tired. When he was a 2-napper it was usually a 9:00 and 2:30 nap. As he moved to one nap, the morning nap got pushed back to 10, then 11, and is now anywhere from 11:45-12:30, depending on the day.

I just transitioned my 1-year old from one solid morning nap and an "iffy" afternoon nap to one good afternoon nap. I completely eliminated the afternoon nap and over a two-week period, pushed the morning nap by 1/2 hour increments until it eventually got to be at 1:00. It was gradual enough that we went through very little fussiness from being too tired. The big motivation for me was to have both my 1-year old and 2-1/2 year old take a simultaneous nap while my 5-year old attended afternoon kindergarten ... and so far, so good!

Good Luck!

My son went from 2 naps to 1 at 15mo. too. He was going to bed too late, and I finally figured out that his 2nd nap was taking away from his nighttime sleep. It was a smooth transition for us. I started napping him about 5 hours after waking (1pm for us), immediately after lunch. In the am we eat breakfast, play, we usually leave the house, then come home for lunch at 12pm. After lunch, everyday, we immediately go from the highchair to his bedroom for a nap. We do our regular routine, and he sleeps for 2 - 3.5 hours! We made his bedtime a little earlier as a result, but nothing drastic. I think he'll adapt find as long as he's ready & you keep a steady routine. Good luck!

My daughter would usually nap at 10:00 and 3:00, but when she turned 11 months she wasn't going down so easily for her morning nap. I started by putting her down at 11:00 and then eventually moved it to 11:30 and she kept that schedule until she was 2-1/2.
