Trying to Conceive - Fertility Problems

I was not able to have my first daughter until I was 36, due to problems conceiving because of Polycyctic Ovary Disease as well as Hypothyroidism. We are trying to conceive again. We have tried fertility drugs and other things before I was pregnant with my daughter but eventually stopped any fertility drugs due to the cost, among other reasons. We decided that if God wanted us to have this child it would happen. Well, we want to try again, but my doctor wanted to wait on fertility drugs this go round. She wanted to wait 6 months or better to see if we needed anything. It's been well over 6 months and since then we have moved to another state. I need to find another OB/GYN that specializes in high risk pregnancies due to my age and health. Any suggestions or recommendations on doctors would be appreciated. Also, any advice on fertility drugs would be appreciated also. I'm worried about my age (now 38) and conceiving at this age. I want to make sure everything is ok for me to have a baby at this age and about the risks to the baby. Any advice or encouragement is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I have the same health problems and finally had my first child in January of 2006 at age 32 (after 6 years of trying). My thyroid problem was actually discovered after I got pregnant and they say may have actually progressed b/c of the pregnancy since all prior thyroid tests were normal. I go to Women's Specialty Care and see Dr. Evans, but Dr.Carlton there is great, too. They are located in downtown Macon by the Medical Center, but all the doctors there are admitted at Coliseum, too. I went through years of Clomid and monthly ultrasounds and just didn't ovulate b/c of the cysts. Then Dr. Evans tried a new procedure that insurance usually doesn't cover(but they coded it so it was covered) called ovarian drilling. Sounds scary, but it was laproscopic and he also did a DNC and hysteopinogram(sp?) and 7 months later I was pregnant. He explained to me that the cycts from the PCOS actually can confuse the ovaries and they don't ovulate. What he did was drilled some small holes into the ovaries/cysts which sort of "released" the cysts. I ovulated every month after that and still used the Chlomid and got pregnant. The staff there is awesome and I have a beautiful 1 year old baby girl that I trully believe I owe all to Dr. Evans. If you would like to email me directly, fell free to at: ____@____.com. I hope that if we try again that it will be easier for me as I will be 34 this year. Good luck and take care!

Hi W.. I too have PCOS. I recommend Georgia Reproductive Specialists. They are located near Northside hospital and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. They are a team of Reproductive Endocrinologists who will help with fertility issues. Once you are pregnant, then you are referred to an OB/GYN. They can refer you to a good OB/GYN. Their phone number is ###-###-####. I had to lose weight-about 35 lbs and take Metformin to get pregnant. I didn't take any fertility drugs like Clomid though. I have a 2 1/2 year old boy and am expecting another boy this month. Oh, I forgot to mention I'm 35. Good Luck.

HEy girl, I have hypothyroidism as well. I also was born with a Unicornuate Uterus, which means I only have half a Uterus and should not be phsycally able to concieve. But what helped me and my husband was those fertility tests strips. Just like a pregnancy test but it tells you when your egss are ready. We tried that and got pregnant right away! Also keep up to date on your Synthroid, I have my TSH levels check every two weeks.
Good Luck!

I'm a 38 year old mom of a three month old. I was also worried about the age thing. Just letting you know there are others out here. I was trying to conceive at 37. I had a miscarriage and we tried again. I was almost 38 when I found out I was pregnant again.

I had read up a lot on fertility and bought a pack of urine test strips off the internet, so I could track my fertility everyday. I also visited the hannah.org website for fertility prayers.

Hang in there!

W.,

I'm not sure what area of town you live in, but if you are in the Gwinnett County area, Dr. Paula Rothman is an excellent OB-GYN who specializes in high-risk pregnancies. She has helped 2 of my friend's conceive and also helped me when my husband and I could not conceive.

If you are in or near the Duluth area, I would be happy to give you her number.

I also have PCOS so I know where you are coming from somewhat, but I am 27, so age will play a part more in your case than mine. I recomend Douglas Women's Center in Lithia Springs off of Thornton Road. I see Luwanne Lenfest ( fertility specialist) & she is great! Good luck!
