Does anyone know the law in MN regarding taking a taxi or shuttle to the airport with a small child? We are going on a cruise and will not need our carseat for the flight or cruise. How do I handle the to and from the airport? I read in NY that the child sits on the parents lap in cabs but that does not seem legal or safe. Any advice would be helpful

What can I do next?

A cab is considered "public transportation" like a bus and thus the car seat rule does not apply. I agree - not safe. However, if you call some cab companies - some will put a car seat in the cab for you.

Have fun on your trip - K.

My friends dad used to be a cab driver. You just have to have you child on your lap unless it was a long travel you caould bring your car seat but if it's just to the airport you dont need anything.

I did a lot of travelling with my daughter as an infant and toddler...including cruises.

I've done a variety of things. Many times I brought the car seat just for the flight itself(sometimes booking a seat for her, other times lucking out and finding an empty seat on the flight...I always found this much easier than my lap...as she frequently would fall asleep in the car seat).

It seems to me that the shuttle required a car seat. I know for a fact that when she was your child's age i frequently travelled with her on my lap in taxis and shuttles, including US cities and other countries. Even when I had the car seat, it usually ended up in the trunk or with the baggage. I don't think I ever used it in a taxi or on a shuttle anywhere other than on the way to the airport in Minnesota. Can't say I ever checked the laws on this, just know that's the way it worked. Good for you on doing your research.

Hi , I have been a nanny for the past 2years and I have a little one on the way. The mother and I would travel from home to home by season, so we were at the airport a lot. We never have brought a carset we would buckle the 2 year old or the 1 year old in with us, and we would never leave unless the we felt the driver would be completely responsible. We have switched drivers twice. We didtn' even leave. They send another taxi immediatly and comp your ride. Use your best judgement, but we have just been buckling in the children in with us, Always in the back seat, also distance it would take us about ten min, If your traveling longer, I know the taxi systems (airport) sometimes have carseat systems they can grab before they leave the airport to come get you.
Something to think about.
good luck
